November 22nd. Is it happening? Still on some lists. No longer on others. Any one know?
Cheers

Re: Sheffield City Race
Sheffield City Race now has the blessing of the University and Council.
The event will take place on Saturday 22nd November.
It will be a chasing sprint format, qualifier in the morning and final early afternoon.
There are 2 brand new maps (one of which has never been used for orienteering) produced by yours truly and mr Oli Johnson, to full ISSOM 2007 specification. We are also planning so expect some top notch courses!
Typical campus terrain -buildings, parkland, steps, passages etc.
Link for entries to follow shortly...
Make a weekend of it by joining us in the pub for the evening and then on Sunday 23rd November theres an SYO District Event at Ecclesall Woods.

If you like sprint/street races, the next 6 weeks is going to be incredible. London tomorrow, a Leeds/Skipton double, a weekend in Venice and then this top quality event in Sheffield. Wow!!
Chasing sprint sounds like fun...

I've just had a relatively easy time calculating the Nopesport Urban League points for London, but have been reminded what a nightmare some of the earlier events were. Could I make a request please:
* that the Urban League categories (18-, open, 40+, 55+) aren't split between different courses;
* that the entries system captures age-classes and that the results system publishes them.
If this is to be the finale of the competition then someone (who's looking at me?) will have to calculate the final results on the spot...

I think you'll find Leeds and Skipton are using the Urban league format for the classes Roger, so should be no problems there.

... unless you have small children and need split starts - in which case chasing sprints are pretty much a no-no! Sadly ruling out both the Yorkshire Pudding and Sheffield for some of us.
Which just goes to show that there is absolutely no way of pleasing all of the people all of the time!

Re: Sheffield City Race
Perhaps organisers need to look at staggering female and male starts for the final in chasing sprint events. A 30 minute interval should normally suffice. That would at least accomodate heterosexual parenting couples.
Split starts for the first race should not be a problem.

Liz X has a good point regards children.
Split starts may help for very little children, but city races are not much fun for older children who are barred from competing (quite rightly) on safety grounds.
I look forward to the day when I feel I can trust Bart and Lisa to run around central London without getting run over!

Judging by my near misses with buses on Saturday I think they'll have to be at least 30...

......and under 60? I thought my bus pass was for using a bus not going under one.

You'll be OK no buses round Endcliffe.
Diets and fitness are no good if you can't read the map.

Re: Sheffield City Race
Skipton Town race has a novices course, that should be suitable for juniors (orange standard +), that does not touch roads, apart from (briefly) a leisure centre car park and schools car parks (on a sunday the latter are empty - with the possible exception of orienteers!).
Leeds University race also will have novices courses that encounter nothing other than very quiet campus roads. There will be some crossing of a couple of roads with light traffic on senior courses, but ample opportunity to run along the pavement between controls on either side of the road, and to cross at a suitable break in the traffic of which there are plenty. You'll never encounter the stream of traffic I encountered at Scarborough in the 2007 British Sprint Champs, which led to a bit of risk taking.

Re: Sheffield City Race
There will be a junior course with no roads in Sheffield also and all courses for the final will only cross one real street and this is one-way so it should be OK. Don't suppose split starts can happen though as the start blocks won't be very long - maybe families can get together to arrange some kind of informal creche?
