How do you file your O Maps?

Job for the summer is to re-organise my 25cm length of shelf for my O Maps. I already have outgrown the original ring binder, started another binder AND there's loads of recent maps just chucked in alongside the file. Probably because I know it will take too long to decide which section of the file they should go in.

Conclusion, plan A isn't working. Time for plan B. How does everyone else organise their maps so they find the one they need quickly and easily? Also that filing it away isn't cumbersome either. Should be scalable too, I suppose.

File them, now there is an interesting concept - I have 2 huge card board boxes full of them and just throw them on the floor and root around until I find the one I want. This has worked everywhere but for former White Rose maps as they keep changing the name of the maps! Will follow the thread with interest but it may take me longer than a summer to organise mine!!

I file them in the recycling bin.

I scan or photo extra special ones. I'll only keep a map if I know I'll have a big race on that area in the next couple of years or if I really think I'm likely to go back and train on the map but even then these days it's easy to get copies of maps for upcoming races if you're into geeking or maps for training. (and going back and training on a map without checking it's ok can anger people...!)
I keep 2 files only, 1 of the current year, I start a file pre season with maps of the big races, then review the races at the end of the year and then bin them. The other file is just of local areas ie Trondheim & surrounding area. We gave our "Glasgow and the surrounding area" file to someone Ross McC? when we left.

Who wants to accumulate huge files of maps? Answer: just about every British orienteer I've ever met.

Good point Harry have also got a whole load of electronic maps randomly scattered on the desktop of my laptop!

Nah, you have to keep them so that when you go back to an area you can dig out the old map and remember what mistakes you made last time (and the occasional flash of [relative] brilliance) and how you can improve next time . . . I need all the help I can get!

If you don't keep them, where do you write your post run analysis and glue your split print-out? That's what the back of the map is for . . . . isn't it?

Don't tell the kids, but I have started throwing out old string course maps. I will probably live to regret it when I start planning the String Course. . .

by 'Other' I mean a big pile next to my fridge, there are maps in there from 1999 to now, I find myself sorting through it every now and again if I need to find a map I know I've run on!

I don't really see the point in keeping maps any more though, it's really easy to get the .jpg files from routegadget

File the maps in the bin MappingMum - it has to be done when there are five of you all competing at events you could fill a ring binder after the Scottish 6 days! Anyway - who wants to remind yourself what a place looks like before you go - much more fun to have a surprise on the start line.

I have a special room. I stick the current years maps to the wall. Each new year, I take all the maps off from the previous year, then cut them up into little squares.

Then I use these little squares as toilet paper! When I check for level of soiling I can get in and about some contours.

I had the pleasure to visit Dundee last week and can safely say that there are fat people there, I saw several prime examples at the Weavers Inn. We use a rating called the "weeble scale" which goes from 1-10. You don't often see weeble 9s or 10s on the move because they are the ones who can't move - they often feature in TV programmes though. My Dundee sighting was a pretty good 8 and working towards 9 judging by the pints being knocked back.

On a serious note about Dundee, has anyone thought of mapping the main university campus there? Loads of pedestrianised areas, cut throughs, underpasses etc. And all in a fairly compact area.

Nice! I predict that your plumbing bills are going to rise in 2009 with the recent move over to waterproof maps. Ill bring some recent local scene maps to the oringen for our chalet and we can stick up some of our best efforts...

I'm in quite a good mood today, the sun is out in Aberdeen and I didn't watch the news this morning. Maybe I will write something about 4x4 drivers and the fuel crisis later.
