I need a thumb compass with a 'magnifier' on it. Anyone know if such a compass exists ?
Cheers

Re: Thumb compass
Both Moscow and Silva sell magnifiers that can be fitted to their thumb compasses - see here - I think the (cheaper but unhinged) Moscow ones can also be fitted to Silva compasses.
I'm not sure about how they mount: my Moscow 3L has a hole that the support bracket screws into, but I think that some combinations may require a bit of drilling.

Such a compass, purchased from Ultrasport, frequently be found on my thumb. See Ian's van at events, or try http://www.ultrasport.co.uk/.

Re: Thumb compass
Moscow version is cheaper, smaller and I think, less magnifying, and as said above the support post fits onto the predrilled hole in the plate. I recently mashed mine and decided to replace it with a Silva and the bigger more expensive magnifier - but I haven't yet got my head round how to fix the two together - drill a hole or get out the superglue? (or both?) any hints gratefully received

Re: Thumb compass
I have a Silva one: it doesn't attach, just fits under the thumbstrap. Seems to work Ok, but the compass magnifier combo will set you back about £80.

Re: Thumb compass
I've used a Silva one for a while and it works well ..except when it falls off. Lost my first one a month or so back in some pretty routine, if rough, Norwegian forest. Didn't notice until too late...hence it became a pretty expensive race. I hadn't had problems before so I guess I didn't have the thumb strap tight enough this time.

Re: Thumb compass
I use the silva which fits under the thumb strap and use sticky pritt pads to stop it slipping and that reduces the risk of losing it. I couldn't do without it.

Re: Thumb compass
I use a Silva magnifier (better magnification, larger magnifier, stronger stand) with a Moscow compass in conventional terrain (I use conventional bearings a lot) and a Silva thumb compass in urban races as I prefer the speed and stability. In both cases, the magnifier stand slips comfortably between thumb and baseplate. I then have a compass lanyard through the hole on the magnifier to keep it attached to my wrist in case it slips out, which it has done once or twice over the last couple of years. It's very quick to put back in place! This combination works really well for me.
