Does anyone think it's reasonable to claim an entry refund well after the closing date just because the entry and final details didn't explicitly state you couldn't?
Surely the closing date is the cut-off for both entering and withdrawing. Well, you might as a courtesy let the organiser know you're not coming but you wouldn't expect a refund as of right.

Re: Claiming a refund after Closing Date
to be honest I'd never expect a refund from any event after I'd entered regardless of when the closing date is.
If I wasn't going I'd do my best to inform the organisers so they could use the map, or try and find someone to take the entry.

No reason why anyone should expect a refund after the closing date. BOC 08 was great because those of us who couldn't run could still get a map - a small gesture but greatly appreciated.

Re: Claiming a refund after Closing Date
Likewise I have never bothered to claim at any time, because organisers have enough hassle as it is, but I don't think the principle is entirely wrong.
What if someone has just been made redundant for example, and needs to cut back on all expenditure? Or if when final details are available the courses or some other significant aspect have changed substantially from what was advertised?
Quite reasonable for the organiser to deduct unrecoverable expenses, and to wait until after the event to see what is reasonable in this respect (eg whether all maps have been resold. But items like levies are based on people who run, rather than enter, so difficult to argue on financial grounds why this part of the fee shouldn't be refunded. Similarly land use fees if explicitly on a per capita basis from the results.
But if we all claimed refunds evey time we didn't run entry fees might have to rise to offset the effect, so if we all "miss" a similar proportion of events doing so would just add a load of administration for no overall financial benefit.

Re: Claiming a refund after Closing Date
I had a refund from JK (but before closing date). It was done on-line through Fabian and I paid a small percentage- think 5%. I appreciated it very much as an unwaged youngster
I think it is important not to abuse the system if it became standard practice though. I was injured with no chance of recovering in time for JK.

Barry Elkington wrote an article in an edition of Focus about a year ago, I think, on this topic.
