I don't go to many events that use Emit but yesterday, from a mid-late start time, saw perhaps 12-15 discarded back-up cards at the first control . And then a smaller batch at a later control (possibly the first control on another course?).

Is this normal?

Random thoughts that distracted me for a few controls

were:
- the act of punching dislodges a significant proportion of cards?
- people keep them to show at the start, and then dispose of them?
(but being 'responsible' throw them where they think someone will collect them later!)
- someone lost one accidentally, but then other people deliberately discarded at the same place rather than risk littering elsewhere on the course?
- there was a batch of slightly undersized cards at that event?

I often find it awkward (and indeed not clear how best) to fit the back-up card and have several times discovered as I go round that I have lost it. Perhaps others find the same problem, and it gets dislodged when they first stress its placement i.e. at the first control.

It's not exactly rocket science.... if you can tie your shoe laces then you can easily fit an Emit backup card (and use the same kind of tape to secure it:)).... And before anyone starts saying 'ban emit because of litter' there is more than likely more bits of shoe tape in the car park than Emit backup in the forest:)

I don't agree that fitting an EMIT card is easy. Try doing it in the minute between moving sections in the start lanes (as some events have required me to do), when your fingers are numb with cold and you'll see what I mean. The edges of the card don't always successfully catch the plastic card lip either. Anyway, not the point of the thread - just an attempt to explain what was highlighted.

No reason to issue backup cards in start lanes... in fact it's a daft idea:) Have a bag at registration or on the way to the start....

And if your fingers are cold & numb in the start lanes then you've not warmed up properly or should be wearing gloves....

EMIT is not rocket science:)

Gross you obvious ly don't suffer from Reynard's disease. Whn you start to exercise hard is precisely when the blood flow to the hands and feet stops. :cry:

Even on a moderately cold winter's day I have to be racing for at least 20 minutes before the flow switches back and a modicum of comfort returns. On a really cold day this never happens. :cry:
