BOC 2008 maps - Stupid Decision

I certainly could not run at full race speed and read the map at the same time.

Race speed is determined by the ability to move (run, walk, crawl) the fastest possible while staying in contact with the map.... sounds to me like Axel was trying to over run his orienteering ability here:) . Race speed is determined by many factors.... physical ability, mental ability, terrain, course, map, weather etc etc.

And in general this discussion on BOC map scales is getting VERY boring... the decision is made 1:10000... get on with it... comments afterwards please - mouthing off in advance will not change anything now..............

Re BOC 2008 map scale - there is an appeal happening now and a decision will be made by next Wednesday (12th). If I hear first I'll post a note.....but seeing I first heard (saw) the prervious decision on Nopesport I'm not holding my breath for a reply from which ever BOF committee/group is now sitting.

Ability to physically get through the terrain, ability to interpret the map and relate it to the terrain at speed, ability to make decisions quickly and follow them through ... all these should be tested by a good orienteering course.

Ability to actually read the map (or control description), as opposed to interpret it, should not be not be an issue for someone with close to normal (for age) eyesight.

Looks like it is now decided.... leave things as they are.... 1:10000 for all competitors. Events Committee, rightly, decided not to try changing things at this late stage.

That isn't what the notice on the BOF website says, even if it may be what the result is. It's a pity that the decision now is what should have been decided ages ago, but may not produce the same result. That's life. Just hope the issue doesn't raise itself on the day.

Where are you reading that RJ - the BOF website says

Accordingly Events Committee is leaving the final decision on map scales for the 2008 British Championships to the planner and controller of each day.

sounds like they can't make up their minds and are passing the buck and no final decision has been made yet!

To me it seems quite a sensible decision, leaving it to the mapping/planning team who know and have experience of the map and forest. After all, that's what happens at the vast majority of events!

Oops - a typo crept in to my last post! - corrected version below!

The result of the appeal regarding map scales at BOC 2008 - the event controllers can make the final choice. Both have chosen to have 1:10,00 for classes that normally use 1:15,000 and a 1:7,500 enlargement for those classes that normally have a 1:10,000 enlargement. Details of which classes will use which maps will appear on the BOC website as soon as they are checked - for the relay there are complexities of some courses being used by a range of age classes.

I hope this resolves the discussion and will encourage more competitors to make the trip north for an event that will provide spectacularly good orienteering in a wonderful area previously unused for competition.

I'm very impressed that the organising teams can respond in such a way with so little time available; as my previous post indicated, I wasn't convinced it was viable. Thank you....I can't tell you how much more I'm looking forward to the trip north now.

I am delighted as I am certain that the majority of competitors effected will have a better experience.

I think it has been a really good example of Nopesport forum success, as I don't believe the momentum for this change would have happened without it. I expect I am in a minority when I say that I'd have had no of the scale until the final details, and in reality probably not until I picked the map up.

A great result (assuming no excessive risk to the printing process at this stage).
However, it poses the question ; assuming the Planners' / Controllers' final decision is the same as their original proposal, what was the justification / authority to override that original intention ?
