SWMBO was rather surprised that her course (6) at Sunday's event at Big Wood visited the same control twice.
Presumably this isn't actually against the rules but it does seem very odd - particularly at a National event.

And I was surprised that probably the optimum route on one of my legs strayed off the side of the map. But that's part of the fun of our sport - you never know what the next event will throw at you.

Re: Deja vu
For courses involved a butterfly loop you visit the same control 3 times, and they aren't uncommon at major events.
I think, if I remember correctly, that the WOC Long event last year visited a couple of controls twice and even had some gaffling?
Generally you'd be coming from a different angle, different attack point(s), keeps you on your toes. And if it saves arguements of having too many controls close together on similar features

and i was surprised that such a rubbish area and map was worthy of being a national event.
Course 1 also had a control visited twice (not exactly a butterfly loop though as we all did it the same way round), and I'm not even sure why they bothered as it didn't add to the course (or even that leg) in any way other than add to the over controlled course.
- Course 1 - 14km - 30 controls,
Course 2 - 12km - 18 controls (and some much better legs).

Probably not, in which case I'll do a scan so people can know to avoid it in future!

Sounds like heaven, there's contours to navigate by and use as control features! there aren't brambles everywhere! the white forest is nice! and even the green forest is nice!

Re: Deja vu
Is RouteGadget compatible with Emit? I can't remember an Emit event appearing on RG.

Last year's JK, I seem to remember Simon E doing a brilliant job of getting RG working.

Ah! I had forgotten. I seem to have been to a lot of Emit events recently and none of them have been routegadgeted - I wondered if it was coincidence or a technical problem, or just organisers not being aware of the possibility.

Hi Mr Chips
try the Maroc and Gramp websites - http://www.marocscotland.org.uk http://www.grampoc.com and check out the list of Route Gadget events - all used Emit....... I guess you've just been unlucky !

This was all true of Big Wood, in parts. The trouble was that the map wasn't very consistent; some of the white was a battle, some of the green lovely (and fast). Also the selection of rootstocks for mapping seemed pretty random; a couple of control circles with only one rootstock marked turned out to have several - although to be fair I think one of the unmapped rootstocks looked very new. 'Rootstock' is taking over from 'insignificant tree' as my least favourite control site!
Going back to the original thread topic, I visited my control 15 twice, but only because I chose to pass it between 2 and 3.

I would agree that it has been quite disappointing down here in the SCOA region where I have been to about 13 events since early Autumn which could have been on routegadget but only one (SLOW - Devils Punchbowl) actually was although I missed the GO event which also appeared.

Thanks Big Jon, I'm glad to have confirmation that it isn't a technical problem with Emit.

The take up of RouteGadget in SEOA (including SLOW, GO et al) has been quite good; the events I referred to have all been in SCOA territory, hence the temptation to wrongly blame it on the choice of technology.
On a similar issue, the uploading of data to SplitsBrowser has been quite variable. I'm delighted that most events use it these days but sometimes you can view a race graph and sometimes you can't; also, sometimes you can compare runners from different classes on the same course and sometimes you can't. I have no idea what determines this. I am enormously appreciative of all efforts by organisers to give us access to these excellent post-race analysis tools, merely curious about these variations.

You are right of course - the two events I mentioned were actually SEOA - all the SCOA events have failed to appear!
