Superb event..... many thanks to LOC. This is why we orienteer!
The Lake District at this time of year is in prime condition for racing. White, intricate woodland with a little bit of open fell to produce speed variation was magic. Total concentration the whole way round. Many thanks to Carol McNeill for a brilliant course. Many maps were reproduced at 1:7500 (mine was) and allowed map reading on the run.... what a difference that makes. Being able to run through intricate terrain and stay in contact with the map is what it is all about.
If you stayed at home and decided it was too far to travel then you missed a gem. Of course you can always come up to the Lakes and run round crap open fellside in August if you wish, and fight with the bracken. BUT. The Lakes have several quality regional and district events coming up over the next few months. Now is the time to orienteer in the Lake District.... don't waste the chance! There is a short race series linked to these events as well, so you can make it a weekend. Find out what orienteering is all about.

I agree wholeheartedly with RJ. An early contender for event of the year 2008?
Check out Julian Laley (SROC) result on M60L. Awesome. I hope I'm still going at that speed when I'm 60!

Not for me. Map scale issue aside, both Bishop Wood (2 weeks ago) and Tankersley (last week) were outstanding and, if we're being selective, we both think that today's courses for us (3 and 5) suffered from the siting of the start. Also, for an event to be challenging for event of the year, it's got to generate atmosphere. By the very nature of the setup, that wasn't really going to happen today. Probably not a lot the organisers could have done about that though. Worth the trip though, and many thanks to LOC for a very well organised event.
Tankersley probably rates no. 1, but Ebor (and planner Jonathan Kendall) get a major award for their successful attempt to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear of an area.
By the sound of it though, Edinburgh last week will rate no. 1 for many.
