hey, this proves my thoery that you lot will chat about anything. I am actually a very normal person on here, who like orienteering and does it week in week out.

This whole thing was a psychology university study. We had to start a topic on any forum to try to get a bit of banter (dont ask me why). It clearly hasnt worked as you people on here are all very friendly and nice people. Well thanks for the so called results. And I hope i havent offended anybody,

Hard luck. If you wanted a response, you should have tried one of:

• Even though M21L at Regional Event X was won in five minutes under/over the guideline time, it doesn't really matter
• The current five-tier event structure is stupid, and should be relaced with a new three/four/five/six-tier structure
• Of course funding bodies should give funding priority to Olympic sports
• The sprint should be made a counting race at the JK, and there should be a middle distance for everybody
• Age classes reduce the amount of meaningful competition, and should be abolished in non-championship events
• Innov-8 shoes are great, and people who don't like them are idiots
• Final details are a waste of time and I never bother to read them
• Sprint and middle distance events aren't proper orienteering, and should be scrapped
• OCAD's licensing system acutally sounds quite reasonable to me
• An accurate ranking list is of the utmost importance
• Retention of current orienteers should be a higher priority the the recruitment of newcomers
• Emit/SI is inherently superior to SI/Emit

Quite right Scott - there would have been many better ways to get a response -
- Scotland is really just another region, like East Anglia
- Mark uncrossable walls and fences however you want - no-one pays any attention anyway
- Bring your dog to as many events as possible, and if you haven't got one, borrow your neighbour's
- All orienteers over the age of 50 should always wear Lycras
- Don't bother with international events, your region's Galoppen is much more important
- People under the age of 25 should keep their opinions to themselves - their elders and betters know exactly what they're doing
- All head-torches are the same
- You can read this forum as often as you like (especially while at work) without ever posting on it
- Urban races are a menace to everything in the city (....including birds)
- It is possible to hold an orienteering event which is perfect in every detail

It'd be interesting to know how riled the members of other chat forums became. Or perhaps they also made comments on the presentation, rather than the substance, of the interloper's points of view.

Could the study be the beginnings of a 'stocking filler'-type book, entitled 'How to lose friends and irritate people' (not that you've lost friends, Jim)? One chapter per irritated group, containing the full scripts of each block of banter?

Anyway, back to work - no more 'chatting about nothing'...
