Hasn't providing blank maps in the start lanes also become standard practice at C4s these days?. It's been a while since I've been to a C4 where the first chance I've had to see the map has been as I'm picking it up to run.

And even longer since you had to copy down map corrections in an attempt to make a 5 year old map usable, and then having to copy down your course after the start whistle had blown. That was the norm at CSC rounds before they became level 3 events and got pre-marked and more up-to-date maps.

So if they hadn't become level 3 events would they still have those features?

Maybe we're just spoilt round here with level 5 events with e-punching and pre-marked up to date maps. Unfortunately whilst the course planning yesterday was very good (at least on the course I ran), the planner gets deducted points for not remembering to cut lines and circles, something I've certainly made sure is done when planning / controlling at our level 5s. As Mrs H says, at least our event was good value.

Aren't we again just highlighting the fact that the boundaries between different event levels are now blurred, and hence the occurrence of event structure review? On that note, the most recent suggestion of the 4 level tier has the "standard" events now divided into ranking and non-ranking. I would suggest that there should be minimal difference in the entry fees between these two "levels" as they were once going to be one, especially if the quality of event is not much different. And this should be encouraged by all events in that bracket attracting the same levies etc.

Having level 3 status in theory ensures a better quality event - look at guidelines A and B and see what a club could get away with if it were level 4. The difference isn't just ranking points.

What do you have in mind? As far as I can see there's currently no rule against five year old maps, master maps, second master maps (!) or charging whatever you like at C3. The main thing seems to be that the area must be big enough to support an M21 course (even though there isn't one in CSC).

Maybe someone should rewrite the guidelines and bring them up to date

Is this correct ? There seem to be some stories that club-only members are not allowed to score and you have to be a paid-up member of BO as well.

There is no such thing as a "club only member" . In the latest Focus (p27) (right next to some helpful illustrations of high fences - but i have sworn to stay out of *that* thread) it says: "under the new membership scheme BO has no concept of 'local' club only members. An orienteer is either a member of BO or not..."

Am I making a correct assumption from this thread, that most clubs ask the participants to pay for their entry.

Aire have for many years paid the entry fee for everyone, and subsidised students travelling from afar.

Little good did it do us this time! But at least the club budget looks a lot rosier with no expenditure required for the final!

I think the confusion is because you can be a club-only member of a second open club.

So, for example. you could join MOR as your BOF club and TVOC as a club-only member. In which case you couldn't run for TVOC in CSC.
(I think this is true even though MOR haven't entered).

Yes... but in that case you're never allowed to run for TVOC ... it's true that (once you're a BOF member, presumably) you can join as many additional clubs as you want as a social member, (if you're some kind of newsletter fetishist ) but (again see Focus p27) you can only ever compete for 1 Open and 1 Closed club as listed on your membership form - you're never allowed to compete for your second or third open club.

interestingly the same article says that you have the choice of running for either Open or Closed club, and neither has any claim - in my almost boundless ignorance i'd had always thought that the Open club has precedence, (am fairly sure that that used to be the case...) - not relevant for CSC, but might be for relays...

Last year there were some relay runs which did not count for league points because one member had already helped to score for his/her "other" club. In all the cases I am aware of one club was open and one was closed. Does this mean that although you can run for 1 open and 1 closed you still can't help both to score points in the same season ? Seems a bit harsh when closed clubs in particular might manage to field a relay team at some events but not others. With BO Champs so far north there could be even more of this in 2008.

correct King Penguin, you can only score for one club each year in the UKRL, but orienteering is not like athletics where one club is first claim and can prevent you competing for another club (there is a special UKA rule for Uni clubs outside the first-claim club region though).
For example, if I run for OD and the team hasn't been declared as not scoring for the UKRL, then I can still run for UWOC at future UKRL events and my team would be allowed to win but it wouldn't score points, the other way round is also true.
I'm perfectly happy with this rule, otherwise there is the possibility of teams throwing a race to ensure their other club wins. I think it would be unlikely but could happen.

For individual races, I can compete for either club, but I always consider myself to be representing both clubs simultaneously (but always enter as UWOC for promotional reasons).
As Greywolf quotes from the Focus article. OD can never force me to run for them.

When I was in MDOC there was a annual fee to the relay pot, if you ran 2 or more relays then you were subsidised

Do AIRE pay for relay entries?

SOC pay half your entry at the JK and BOC Relays. If Juniors have to run in Senior or Ad hoc teams they only pay the Junior amount. For the CSC competitors pay. I still had one person who complained at the fee at Yately, and that was the cheapest CSC fee
