Culbin or Anargach for me plus Warwick Street Race. Also enjoyed first Day of French 5
Diets and fitness are no good if you can't read the map.

Home events _scarborough on the Saturday sprints (spend the Sunday morning at Scarborough hospital having my hand x-rayed after falling on the Saturday (not on the bluebells but on the way to the bl***** start!)
Abroad - has to be Venice, but enjoyed the park race in Valencia at the time of the Fallas - fireworks like you'd never believe.

Glad you recognise quality Scottish terrain - but please do not misspell Anagach - even if that is how the English mispronounce it

I can't decide on my event of the year - there have been so many.
So instead I will use this thread to thank the event officials of everything I have been at and to wish them a Very Merry Christmas and Best Wishes for 08.

Seconded!
I reckon i did about 30 events this year, furthest south was the Glasgow city race, on some of the best areas in the UK: Darnaway, Inshriach, Culbin, Anagach, Roseisle, Aberdeen Uni (great event), Drumashie, Camerory (well I liked it), Carse, etc, etc what a shame my orienteering didn't do them justice.
Craig Leach wins for having the best (= most readable) map and because for some of the race i was orienteering at speed - for the first time in at least a decade

If you thought Culbin was good this year you are going to be blown away by BOC 2008!

Re: EVENT OF THE YEAR
The "traditionalists" might like to note that less than half the events mentioned in this thread have been conventional classic-distance forest events.
For me personally, such events will always be the most important part of our sport, but variety is the spice of life and I welcome the current trend for serious competitions in multiple formats.

Re: EVENT OF THE YEAR
For me as a junior it has to be when I went on the Halden tour. At the end of the 2 weeks we travelled to Sweden and competed in the Junior Tio Mila...It was amazing and I was on a high once i'd finished on last leg. An excellent event would love to do it again. Also the area was really good too.

Re: EVENT OF THE YEAR
MEROC's Regional event at Ainsdale Dunes gets my vote.
Complex new English area with few paths, accurate map and an enjoyable course that required navigation skills rather than just running ability which is so often the case at Regional events.
Despite spending some time helping a junior to re-locate, this enabled me to achieve a rare
Gold badge standard which was perhaps helped by some divine intervention for being a good
Samaritan.
Although the recent 'Event Structure Review: Rankings List' thread had a few criticisms about
how ranking points are calculated, many of them relating to who turns up for the event, if you know you've had a good run at a Regional event, your ranking points and badge standard
usually reflect this to a satisfactory degree, or at least it does at my level as a recreational orienteer, and to me this gives a reasonable measure of performance.
For myself and others in this category (the majority?) this is all we need to know. However, I
wouldn't object to the various revisions to the rankings suggested and shown by Simon E, Swat and Mike Cumpstey, although I'd go with Mike's as I'd be 144 positions higher than in Swat's!
Has anything further been decided on this?

Re: EVENT OF THE YEAR
I went to so many events that I really enjoyed, but the ones that stood out were the Oxford City Race, the Scottish 6 Day sprint and Culbin. On my 4th or 5th visit to Culbin I finally cracked the contours and was able to work out where I was. It did help having a alrge(1:7 500) map though
I must admit I really have enjoyed the city sprint races as you have to make decisions at such high speed (even for a slow old blob like me
) Hope that there is another Warwick Race as I was unable to go. Am already looking forward to Guildford.

Re: EVENT OF THE YEAR
Happy New Year to all.... my favourite for 2007 isn't a competition but just the fact that I am fortunate enough to be able to run in technical forests anytime I want:)
Go orienteering in Lithuania......... best in the world:)

Re: EVENT OF THE YEAR
OK, I am late, but my favourite in a year when I did not leave Scotland, was Rogie.
Even though it really was knackering - decent length courses and hardly a path. Cracking weather too.
