Well the worst of the weather held off, and we even had some sunshine albiet briefly.

I am delighted to say that OD won - winning the double with the CSC.

yeah well done everyone, that was my last competition as a junior so good to go out on a high!

sorry stodgetta for being pessimistic, it was actually much better than i thought after looking at the forecast. Courses were pretty good, much trickier than the map made it out to be-i didn't speak to anyone who didn't make mistakes in the southern part. Will route gadget be going up? It would be interesting to see as i know jo and i were swapping lead over each other a fair bit.

What makes OD so successful? Can we have some??!! Their second 9 counters would have come 6th! Winners of CompassSport Cup, Club of the Year, Yvette Baker all in the same year!!

I have looked at route gadget with interest. This is the final of a major junior competition yet, having not been in the area, I cannot see that the 3 shortest courses fulfil the rules for TD 1, 2 or 3. There could of course be things on the ground that make it rather mre obvious, but the results in orange at least suggest that it is worse than it looks.

White TD1 - the start looks very dubious - were they led/ directed/ taped to across the open to the correct path? 2-3 is not a path route. Leaving 3 there is no clear way to go. Before 5 there is a junction...

Yellow TD2 - The start must have been difficult to manage with white going the other way. Leg 2 has route choice (lots of it).

Orange TD3 - Leg 5 looks very dubious - turning off a track onto an indistinct path, then what might be rather a minor junction is the only attack point with absolutely nothing if you miss it. 6 certainly has no line feature route away from it. 8 looks really tricky.

Also Light green, in a forest that carries little TD5 potential uses control 13, the most TD5 control in the area. (TD4 "Errors should not be expensive in terms of time lost")

I repeat I was not there and it might be that many of these things wer okay on the ground. If not it must be of concern that such a major final should fail to meet the rules so significantly.

This is now in the correct discussion about teams not showing at major events.

There was a guiding principle in the Early Years of the YBT about the final's location, which was an attempt to avoid this situation. This was that the final should be in an area within or very close to that bounded by the M62, A1,M4,M5 and M6.

N of Scunthorpe was certainly pushing this. Sandringham (2008) and Sussex (2009) even more so. It is likely that these will lead to even more no shows.

While I agree with you largely particularly on the white and yellow you must take in to considereation the scale of the map (1:5,000 I think).

On the Orange if the indistinct path is distinct then its not that difficult and number 6 is only 30m from the original path; perfectly allowable to expect someone to cut back across to the original path - it would proabaly be in view anyway. 13 on the LG is 80m through slow runnable forest with a catching feature 10m behind it - definately only LG standard.

I hadn't realised the scale so I take your point about orange and L G. The results on orange do suggest that something was very hard, or were nearly all competitors on the wrong course for thei ability?

Anyway my biggest concern would be the technically easiest courses. White is hardly difficult to plan (as long as there are paths) it just takes everyone to realise just HOW easy it must be.
