There was an orienteering question earlier today on the BBC 2 Quiz Programme, Eggheads.
Judith Keppel (the first winner of £1million on 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire') was asked the following question (after the 3 multiple choice questions):
Murnaghan: What is the name of the sport involving map, compass and cross country running?
Keppel: Orienteering. Is that a sport?
2 Points:
1) Most of the questions on Eggheads are 'difficult' questions that most people don't know the answers to.
2) Would most of the minority that have heard of orienteering ask the same question as Keppel?
Will it always be thus?

Only publicity and education is going to give people an accurate idea of what the sport is about. We are not helped at all by many activities advertised as 'orienteering' which aren't a true representation - that's probably the greater problem and one that it will be more difficult to address.

Re: Orienteering question on Eggheads
When I was a teaching student one of my peers was asked to do orienteering on teaching practice.
This turned out to be to drive them to a spot near Coniston Water, give them a compass and a bearing, then pick them up the other side of Torver Common. No map was involved!!!!!
