Interesting thing in the 'cancelled events' listing.... the October Odyssey is being shown as cancelled. Need confirmation of that... anyone know the status for the event?

Looks like the OO is still on - see http://firth.orpheusweb.co.uk/flyer/ood.html - "It is reported that the new BOF website is going on line stage by stage and carries what appears to be a cancellation note. No such note has been posted by the organisers of this event"

New site looks good to me. Understand it is going on live progressively so some things such as results not yet up.

Navigation seems easier. New Members page accessed with the Password you should have been sent looks good. You can renew your membership on line via that page.

Old link did not work if you had /homepage at the end of britishorienteering.org.uk on your Favorites, which I did. http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk worked fine.

Definite improvement, far more professional design and greatly improved navigation layout! I guess there are still a few things to be ironed out - one little thing that would be nice is that when you select a sub-subcategory, e.g. Event Information > Competitions > Major Events, the other sub-sub categories still remained visible, rather than having to click through competitions again.

Haven't seen the new sight yet.... but if Scotland really is called a 'County' then BOF is a bigger joke than it was before... no matter how easy to read the sight....... BOF becomes a joke:)

County may simply be a typo, a bit like using the word sight instead of site....

and the map is back! Makes things slightly easier. The information does seem to need checking by people and errors reported - as an examples all universities are supposedly "open clubs" and ShUOC are Sheffield Hallam Uni OC... I'm also slightly concerned that the contact details for the club/British Orienteering link have been assumed to be those for the public/club link and emails/mobile numbers etc have been published, potentially without knowledge/consent.

I couldn't get the old one from my favourites so searched British Orienteering through google and got the new one. I managed to find my own club from the club search but couldn't get the SYO site (trying to find some results on there) However may be SYO problem of course.

I'm guessing you're after the Bingham results. I can email them to you if you pm me your address (the link to the syo website from the new British Orienteering doesn't work and if you do find the SYO website then the link to the results is broken anyway, but they should be there soon I hope!)

Hopefully the site will have a full permanent course list, but the database is still short of the necessary data according to the site:

"Celia Watkinson (Regional Development Officer) has been collating the information sent by clubs about Permanent Orienteering Courses and has built up a substantial database. However, there are still several clubs that have not sumbitted any information about their courses. If you would like to submit details of POCs please complete this form and return to the National Office."

Looks like a good site, well done BOF. Teething troubles are normal I suspect for a new site, hopefully the webmaster is reading this thread or people are emailing the webmaster

the problem is there's so many errors, where would you start? according to the club directory, most clubs don't produce newsletters or run CATIs, or even have a club kit??

Most of this stuff should've been sorted before it went live - visually the site's a great improvement on the previous - but it needs to be factually sound too.

(but it's interesting to compare the costs of club membership, some, apparently, are free, others are £20 plus for families. Also it appears that regional association memberships vary from free to £30 (families) - is this really the case? and if so what's the justification? - can't see why there should be any significant variation between clubs)

No it doesn't - on the old site you could see all the clubs listed alphabetically and merely clicked on the one you required.

But for someone new to the sport, who doesn't have a clue of the club name in their area because it is random and obscure, it is better. And the club acronyms were listed, not the names - this way at least things are more intelligible. And why else would someone be looking at "find a club" on the BOF website? - if they knew the name, surely google it and straight to the club homepage...

We're trying to encourage newcomers and make the sport more open, trying to remove some of the things that makes the sport far too inclusive. Look at the majority of event flyers for instance - how is a non-orienteer meant to understand all of that jargon without finding somewhere to look it up? At least this is a step in the right direction and Joe Bloggs could now, relatively easily, find their local club.
