How dya think the two finns feel sharing first place at a world championship, its like you are the equal best in the world, it cant be the same as winning it individually.

But if the epunching is recording times to a tenth or hundredth of a second, no problem deciding the winner surely? Or do the rules say it's to the nearest second?

From the IOF web site news:
Minna Kauppi and Heli Jukkola both think it is even better to share the gold than just get it, or just not get it.
“We have competed against each other for a long time. In relays we have been on the Finnish team together. It was good that we shared the gold today. That's better than if one had been one second faster than the other”, smiles Heli Jukkola.
Minna Kauppi thinks the same. “A shared gold is not like a silver. It's a gold”, smiles Minna.
I think that timing rules are to whole seconds for middle and long but maybe 1/10th sec for sprint - not sure about that - someone will know!

Definitely the nearest second for Middle and Long. I seem to recall reading that the rules have been changed this year so that it's the same for the Sprint also. I may be wrong - I guess we'll find out on Sunday.
It was an amazing finish. Heli was 10 seconds ahead at pre-warning, but then went the wrong side of the building that the last control was on. She may be delighted with the shared gold but she'd have been well gutted if she'd lost out by a second!
In the men's race Merz was just awesome - totally dominant, and looked like he'd been out for a training run when he came in. Jamie was really strong at the end too, and was soon signing autographs for the Ukrainian kids. (Thierry was there spectating, and the Chinese team were all taking turns to have their photo taken with him!)
It's baking hot again today, but the forecast is for it to cool down a little (from 35+ down to 30) over the weekend which should suit the Brits.

I should think they're delighted, given they beat the best orienteer in the world into third. Its
probably better than winning a race which Thierry chose to sit out

Coming soon

The gaffling, particularly the ladies, is extraordinary. Looking at it it seems to me that all these people that appeared to be making mistakes in the final part may simply have had further to go.
Where the crowd made aware that when the runners passed through the assembly area they had not been equal distances, and had different lengths to run?
