Stockholm orienteering
I'm moving to Stockholm next week and intend to join a club once I'm settled, but don't have a clue about who join - has anyone got any suggestions? I'll be living near Frescati but won't have a car or access to one, if that makes a difference...

there are no clubs _really_ close to frescati, altho' the forest is mapped etc. what i would suggest is going along to training runs with the royal orienteering technologists, student (mostly) training group and have a chat to them.

i haven't been for a while, but they usually go training at least once a week from lappkärrsberget (student accommodation area - lappis). website claims long run tuesday at 6, intervals thurs same time + place, although i would leave a message on the guestbook to check there's going to be anyone there as it's summer holidays at present (although not for much longer).
hope this helps.

Stockholm Clubs
Carol,
These are the clubs in Stockholm which are on the web (http://www.orientering.se/stockholm/t2.asp?p=17099). There are 38 to choose from. You have chosen a good location as Stockholm district has the largest concentration of orienteers in the World. Several of these clubs are quite close to you and many more are really not so far away. Every club is different and it depends what you want.

Uni clubs in Sweden are virtually non-existant and the KTH club ic talks about is a bit of a rarity. Most students in Sweden will train with a local 'open' club. I hear you will be at Stockholm University (?) rather than KTH in any case?
My advice is to go to train with several clubs before commiting to any one. (It is also not a problem to train with more than one club in any case). Each has a different atmosphere.
Many people don't have a car, and it can be a hinderance in any case - and now the congestion charging has started again, it is costly too. Virtually all races you can get to by public transport and getting around is easy generally with public transport too, and a monthly travel card is about 1/5th of the price compared to London.
PM me if you want more advice - I lived in Stockholm for 4.5 years up to a couple of years ago. I feel you need to think about if you want an elite club, well-organised, good hut and nearby training to the hut, young/old club, Good women/men, big social scene, etc. etc.
