Design 11 in that second collection also says it all!
Actually out of all the alternative designs I've seen, design 1 in http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/6722205.stm is by far the cleverest, and far far better than the official one.
Being an eternal optimist, surely the while thing is simply an exercise in getting people to come up with their own ideas and selecting the best of them, and the original they released is simply a joke. Please somebody tell me that's really the case!
Really, really wouldn't want to be the person who selected that piece of rubbish right now, particularly if the same person is responsible for approving the design budget.

The jagged emblem, based on the date 2012, comes in a series of shades of pink, blue, green and orange and will evolve in the run-up to the Games.
This sounds distinctly like a get out clause!! Wonder what it will look like by 2012?

I think it's brilliantly naff. The media only reports on bad news. I bet it achieved more than 400K's worth of publicity in the first hour.
A pity the same approach didnt work in orienteering - B O sport didnt grab the headlines.

I think the logo is pretty good. Maybe the cost is a bit excessive, and the original colour is a bit extreme, but the basic design is good. I think it will grow on most people especially as they develop it over the next 5 years. I think they've made it a bit different and used the extreme colours to immediately grab the publics attention and put the London Olympics in everyones minds - which they've done brilliantly, the sponsors will be loving it.

400K for the branding, logo and a bright pink "Olympic vision", is a bargain. Those other designs were simple, clever and easy on the eye, the sort that might win a Blue Peter competition.

I like it.
In its correct setting, i.e as a backdrop, on merchandise etc it's going to look good.
Take a look at the logo as a backdrop to the fencers at http://www.london2012.org (click on 'watch' and then scroll down!!)

Harry: it seems to have pissed off most of Britain, and I know we're a nation of moaning gits but I think its fair to say that this is with good reason. Obviously taste with regards to design is a very individual thing but the bulk of the design community seems to be against it too.
The original branding was good, and flexible, this however isn't good though it may well be flexible.
It may well have achieved great publicity, but its mainly been negative for wollf olins (who incidently are behind other acclaimed flops such the BT piper (although they did also do the current bt coloured globe logo), and a brand overhall for Abbey National which lasted a whole year and a half.

Trying to design branding that is going to look good now and for 5 years time is difficult but this looks very NOW (in a nu-rave dayglo way) or else very 80s. Which is exactly what its still going to look like in 5 years time, this has been and past, its not going to be coming back into fashion.

I think you'll find that what I wear in the forest is an iconic brand which sums up what orienteering is all about. It is not just a marketing logo, but a set of clothing which will become familiar, instantly recognizable and associated with orienteering until such time as it gets too worn out.

cut the pieces out (just the solid colour, ignore the yellow outline) then rearrange them to make a perfect square!

But Dids, this is Nopesport, and we know all there is to know about everything. And we're right. Always.

Maybe...
