I suspect the main issue is the declining numbers of active members in many clubs. In my club (small but not the smallest) I doubt whether we'd ever get enough for a full team given our present size - even if the harvesters were local. But no doubt there are some potential competitors every year (4 of us wanted to run the harvesters when it was last in the south east).
Nopesport variety pack teams might be an answer. Another might be to somehow encourage small clubs to produce combined teams with neighbouring clubs.

Another problem, although in some ways a good one to have, is that there are too many top class events to go to on successive weekends. National event at Caw, Springtime in Shropshire, Harvester, Twin Peaks at High Dam. If you want a weekend off it is hard to choose which one to miss.

Weekends off are for the weak!
Run yourself into the ground...
It's about this time of year that this usually happens to me, for exactly the reasons you suggest!
All the events seemed to good to miss though, so I had to do them all.
Looking forward to July for my month off though!

Yes, well surprisingly we reckon both O-ringen and Scottish are cheaper and/or less hassle to get to (but a lot more money otherwise!), especially when you consider the amount of quality orienteering available (ouch, did I just hear the phrase 'value for money'? Must be the onset of M50s - next I'll be growing a beard!).

I measure value for money in terms of enjoyment of the course and if it suits my needs certainly not on how long it is. I'm coming up to the 50's too and don't intend to grow a beard or change my view on orienteering.
I' may be fitter than I have been for a while but that will never make me into a distance runner, I'll be able to do the run in faster

Diets and fitness are no good if you can't read the map.

Hey! Do I sense a bit of M/W50 bashing? I'll have you know that my best beard was as an M21 (not that I orienteered then) and that was also the age at which I gave any consideration to 'value for money' - coz I didnt have any!
These days, as an M50, If I gave any consideration to VFM, I wouldnt do (or drink) half the things I do
, and as for orienteering, I run M50s if I want to be able to run the next day rather than lie in bed with a pack of ibuprofen, NOT because I have a beard, which I do ... but it's only a little one, and it is good value for money.

Meanwhile, back on the Harvester Relays thread:
I'm on 1st leg for SYO. Not sure if I'll be kicking any butt, but I did enjoy the British Nights when they were last at Penhale...
Any other first leg runners out there...?

Not from me - I'll be there next year (and Mrs awk is already there).

That should have been Live-O results!!! Obviously too early for my typing fingers/brain! Just as well NOC not relying on me to think and run this early in the morning!
