It's all gone quiet again so here's a couple of snippets from the management committee minutes which sound iteresting

PC also noted that the issue of newcomers to events being given appropriate information and
coaching to enabling them to take part in an event (Enquiry tent) was put at risk by the
insurance issue that determined that only qualified coaches could deliver this. MH responded by
stating that any person can offer advice but only coaches (insured) can enter into a ‘contract’
with people to provide coaching. Therefore as far as insurance is concerned people offering
assistance need to make it clear to the participant that they are offering advice and NOT
coaching (unless they are a qualified coach).

Well that would have scuppered my MADO initiative for starters!

Mike makes it quite clear that you just have to say "I aint coaching, I'm advising"

ha ha ha - no actually i think Mharky's got the wrong end of the stick -It's hard to get people to volunteer to do this - many think they are not up to meeting and greeting newcomers and need a lot of encouragement to take the job on - often they are very good because they know where newcomers struggle - so to tell them they have to start off with a disclaimer is not going to go down well. it's another deterent to getting people to help

again why ?

A newcomer turns up at registration and asks "what do I do?"
person at registration says "oh if you would like some advice these people are happy to help"

and the sign at enquireys says "Advice available here"

no-one has to mention coaching.
and anyway coaching is a very different thing - I don't imagine anyone actually does coach a newcomer - advice or instruction being a much more accurate term.

Coaching is working with someone to develop ideas, skills, techniques.
Advice / instruction is a matter of 'how to.'

Also, don't read everything as an obstacle.

I'm not a qualified coach - so unless I have a coach available I can't run a coaching session.

Beginners get instruction and advice.... coaching is a much deeper concept than the 'how to'.....

Actually, at MADO, a mix of coaching and advice has been on offer.

Both coaches and non-coaches have been offering some the 'advice/help' bit, but additionally, qualified coaches have been providing proper 'coaching' to young orienteers and older orienteers with a reasonable amount of experience.

Unfortunately, due to the difficulty of getting onto first-aid courses, some of these coaches are no longer able to 'coach' and presumably will have to limit their activities to advising - woe betide them if they get carried away and do any coaching!

I think we need a dose of the Italian concept here, namely, "You can devise as many rules as you like as long as no one enforces them"

As previous post's state there are few instances of coaching at events. Few orienteers receive coaching (even less regularly) whilst many train and receive advice.

Can you not do any coaching now without a first aid certificate?
I presume it is OK as an assistant on a coaching session if there is a lead coach with a first aid cert. I know youngest was asked to try and get a cert for tour coaching/assisting but was unable to find one after the exams and before the tours. Even those before exams seemed to be during the week.

It's been a requirement to have a 1st aid certificate to become a qualified coach for some years... one reason I have never become 'qualified' as I don't like blood:)

It depended on the level of coach, I still have my certificate but I don't coach at a high level.

I think First Aid certificates are only valid for 3 years.

HOCOLITE and RS are both right (note the "current first aid certificate": most first aid certificates do indeed only remain "current" for three years).
