Maybe someone organising their first BOC wouldnt have the benefit of this (someone else's) wisdom? A professional co-ordinator who has some experience of the job might.

Every September British Orienteering arrange a Major Events Conference where just this wisdom can be handed on from recent planning/organising teams to the teams undertaking the tasks in the next couple of years. I found it helpful.

ok, I'm well beyond my comfort zone defending my suggestion here as I've never organised or planned a major event (I'm far too busy posting on nopesport for that).

I guess I should be talking about a philosophy rather than a proposal. The way I see it the sport has a dilemma, more volunteers are needed for grass roots development - to organise events, publicity, coaching etc. I also see a potential volunteer crisis in years to come if the current generation of orienteers over 40 arent replaced, or if they are replaced by a generation who arent interested in volunteering for the big jobs. However as individuals I believe orienteers will be able to pay more as (on average) UK individuals are increasingly wealthy and more prepared to spend on services they value. So a way forward to answer the dilemma is to generate more time by paying individuals who would otherwise spend their time earning money some other way.
