Traditionally, regionals are better than districts because...
1/ You get a better area and newer/overprinted map
2/ You don't risk inexperienced planners/controllers
3/ You get a better level of competition
All of these reasons are unravelling as the sport gets smaller and more experienced. Good, new areas are rare and overprinting is the norm. Novice planners/controllers are rare. And the quality of competition is reversed - at regional events people of similar ability are spread over a panoply of classes. At districts there are fewer people of a given standard in total, but they're more often on the same course.
Personally there are two things regionals still have:
1/ Larger numbers leads to more atmosphere at the event - it feels like a race.
2/ Longer courses available (Like most orienteers, I like to be out for over an hour).

In conjunction with the Harrop Tarn regional event there will be a short race on the Saturday. This Short Race will be part of a three race series being run in conjunction with the SROC National (11/03/07) and the LOC National (20/05/07).
The event to go with the Harrop Tarn event will be at Baysbrown Wood, Langdale (GR314050). You can enter the events by emailing to lakeland-shortrace@tiscali.co.uk and get event details from the website http://www.cumbrian-short-race.org.uk
These weekends, which are to be staged each year, will give the opportunity to orienteer on some of the best terrain at the very best time of year, when the vegetation offers very little obstruction to fast navigation/running.
It will certainly be worth the journey!

Slightly off topic, but does any know when and where the start times for Harrop will be published.
I find the merged lakes website/s a bit disjointed and there is no info on the details sheet referring to start times publication. The phone line only refers to tonight's event. Entries close tomorrow, but for those who have to travel or have busy weekends some notice would help.
Thanks if anyone can help.
