Waterproof Maps
Based on a sample of three maps printed on waterproof paper it appears there is significant variance in the clarity of the print and the resistance of the paper to mud/grass stains. For me the clear leader in both respects is Grovely Woods West (Sarum 25 Mar 07). Compared with JK Day 2/3 and the JK relays the colours are much brighter and the detail clearer. I accept that Grovely is less detailed than the JK maps but even allowing for this there remains a marked difference in clarity. I would suggest this is a factor of the whiteness of the paper. Least clear is the JK relay map. This map happens to be printed on paper that appears less white than the other two. The Caerwent map also seems more absorbent than the others and despite fine weather mine has suffered more from staining than the other two. Clearly there is little science behind these observations however I am interested to know if others share my views.

Yes, I definitely found the Caerwent map harder to read than the JK individual days, which even at 1:15000 seemed quite clear (was pleasantly surprised at the clarity). The paper appears rougher as well as less white, guess this isn't so much of a problem on "simpler" areas but on somewhere like Caerwent with lots of small detail then not so good. As alluded to in another thread, not sure if the print process also affects this as well or not - the relay maps seem to be laser printed, the individual days offset printed. I did find the purple ink running/smudging slightly on the offset printed maps afterwards too.
