Geeks in orienteering
Why are the biggest geeks in orienteering rarely any good at the sport?

How can you be good at orienteering if the luck element is magnified by bingo controls, inconsistent mapping, ambiguous out of bounds marking etc, etc, etc, etc?
It's the 'geeks' that stop orienteering being no more than a silly party game.
Live with them!

It's a geeky sport. Maybe you just notice it more in those that fail to get the top results.
Though, I think having a mapping system set up alphabetically and yearly, all organised through the computer is a wee bit too geeky...

I want to walk up the side of the mountain, I want to walk down the other side of the mountain. I want to swim in the river, lie in the sun. I want to try being nice to everyone.

Didsco, you doth protest too much, methinks. (Yes, I know it's geeky to use that quote + know it was the Queen in Hamlet).
This is the second post today about this!
a) What's wrong with being a Geek?
b) Where is the corelation between being a Geek + being good at something?
c) I don't class myself as a geek, but I don't have good results at Orienteering; if I practice more at Geekiness will my orienteering improve?
d)Maybe this is on your mind as it's coming up to Pi day (March 14, or as the americans write it 3/14)

Ed Nash was/is a self confessed geek and he's good.
Lilywhite's definitely a geek and he's good.
In fact many members of the british squad do a disturbing amount of map geeking and preparation for the big races.
Craney had worked out the long leg for the british champs last year before we ran the course, worked out his route, and won the leg by 30secs.
GG plays catching features for extra training!
Sadly, the very nature of the sport attracts obsessive compulsive people!
Still agree with DIDSCO that nopesport threads seem quite boring these days - will try to start some interesting threads if i can.

Nottingham University: September 2000 - September 2009. Staying in higher education for a decade is harder than you think.
