A training weekend in the Lakes started a hot topic of conversation, particularly amongst the girlies!

Choice of knickers for a female orienteer is important (and probably for a male, too, but I wouldn't know about that!) as you want comfort, style, flexibility, no distraction or pain, and there was huge debate as to which were the "best"

Chasers can't decide, so it's only appropriate to open the debate to the wider orienteering public...

I've voted "other" because I wear M & S bikini style briefs - not sexy I know but I still wouldn't describe them as "granny" style - more "mumsy" style:?

I'm with you on that one, Mrs H, but as far as our juniors were concerned over the weekend, anything made for comfort rather than style was classed as granny!
I can't imaging anything worse than lace scratching and itching and needing to be hoicked down on a regular basis

When looking for knickers for a 4 month long expedition, when washing was going to be a challenge at times, I looked at specialist sports underwear, but it was pretty expensive - around £15 per pair. So, I went to M&S to see what they had, and bought several pairs of nylon knickers, with cotton cotches, which turned out to be ideal, around £5 per pair - black or purple, rather than white, to hide the dirt from sitting / falling in wet / boggy areas. They're also ideal for orienteering - comfortable even when wet from sweat and they dry quickly after washing. Style less important than material, in my opinion. I'm female, by the way.

its gotta be lacy french knickers!
they dont go up your bum,
look pretty,
can be worn in normal day to day so you dont need special "O" knickers,
dont get horrible and sweaty,
and dont give you knicker lines! (last two points obviously extremely important when being followed up a steep hill!)
they would also dry very quickly if being washed and have dont have seems/seams(however its spelt!) that can rub!

they have to be the winner!


ooh and you can get them in a range of colours so you can co-ordinate to your sports bra! eh stodgetta!

i always wear lacy french knickers when orienteering. i'm looking for lacy french sports bra options if anyone has any suggestions?

Ben, I don't reckon they make sports bras in your size mate. Are you still wearing those lacy little things? They must have worn through by now surely?

I think you're getting unduly excited, Mrs H. The question appears to be "What knickers are best for women", so the blokes are simply answering that question rather than revealing what they wear - unless of course they're misunderstanding the question too.

If I was answering the question as Mrs H interpreted it, given I normally wear lycra shorts and no knickers, is that "none" or "other"?

Pampers should be pretty good aswell. Quite comfortable if you believe the adverts and certainly in the US they are now being made in adult sizes.

Oops - typo, should be "sitting". Knickers are much less bulky than nappies or inco pads!

thongs arent good with see through trousers(as o trousers do tend to be)- like who wants old men staring at your pretty bum?! whereas frenchies tend to be well...pretty, not too revealing and have enough coverage to wear with o trousers.
