If you are too injured/ill to perform properly at a selection race, you should inform the selectors and not run.
However does this mean that you can't then participate (and walk) at said race?
Could you not enter a different class or "run" the correct class, strictly non competitive and not eligible for selection from that race?
Is the answer to these no?
If so, why not?

If you are serious about a recovery programme from an illness or injury I am not convinced that a (possibly) longish journey to a selection race and a walk would really be the best for you. Better to do some light 'training' nearer to home. Selectors are looking for long term commitment to an athlete's progression as well as results. There have been some very good examples from the current GB senior squad who missed out on a season (or longer) through an injury or illness but came back when it was right for them. 'Long term' planning is important - the Start and Potential programmes are about making senior World Class athletes. Of course we don't know which good juniors will be in it for the long haul but whether any individual 'makes' it' or not there's still the long term health of the individual to consider and training when unfit isn't sensible.
