Not a fan. But at least we've got a JK, and EMIT may be the price.

Will have to try and make time to practice with the pesky gadget. The few times I've used it, I've never been entirely confident I've been doing it right - so have spent far too long at control sites.

Also found the display more confusing than helpful.

All of which shows my general lack of pre-race preparation. But I may not be untypical. SI is so uncomplicated for the competitor by comparison.

Hope there are lots of EMIT units made available for the multitude to practice on.

I couldn't agree more... EMIT is fine.

You put in the brikke, watch for the flashing light, then leggit towards your next control. If they use the newer versions of the brikke then there's a little LCD screen which flashes up bars when the unit has registered, as a second check.

And there is a backup card on the back which is marked by a pin at every control, so you'll get a specific pattern for your course if you punch correctly.

Easy really.

I find the main problem with EMIT is Murphy's Law - why is it that 75% of the controls at Emit events always seem to have the base plates the wrong way round for me ? You don't get this with SI - apart from one event where the units were mounted vertically on posts and not horizontally on top, so at some (again more than half !) you had to turn round to stick the SI card in horizontally from the right direction.

Emit is the dogs, its simple, harder to lose, gives more confidence that you have punched, doesn't have a gay name like a 'd1bber' also love the fact that Nope have done this too, brilliant guys, but maybe should try and outlaw all types, so with a 1, line or whatever some numpty thinks of ( i just put this in as i wanted to insure everyone knew what i was saying) i appologise for even writing it, it hurt me too

as for 75% being the wrong way round, you need to learn the flip method, elastic loop on your index finger, then can flip from one to the other driection in a nano second.

It's the same things that come up time and time again - and mainly boils down to people don't like using EMIT because they're unfamiliar with it as SI is the prevalent e-punching system in their area.

A fact of the UK orienteering scene: some events will use SI, some will use EMIT. Just get used to using both and all these "problems" will miraculously be solved! What's the betting that the JK sprint will use contact-free controls and everyone who hasn't yet used them (those not at Oxford...) will suddenly be saying how great EMIT is??

Of course all this debate would be solved if someone came up with a system which incorporated the best of both worlds

Personally I'm not fussed which system is used and like Seabird says at least we have a JK (Which was by no means certain this time last year). Just wanted to get you all chattering.

But what does surprise me is that there appears to be no mention on the website that Emit is being used. I didn't see it until I had got through to the internet entry form - which I promptly stopped filling in and started sending an e-mail to Santa to ask him to put some e-cards on the present list

I su[ppose if it had been me - I would have bigged up the Emit aspect one way or another - not buried it. If people know what they are getting in advance - no matter how much they don't like it - they are less likely to be disappointed and/or critical.
