What do you do with a computer mouse? Mouse? What do you do with glasses? Glass? What do you do with XBOXes? XBOX?

It is a piece of Technology with a name, an SI Card. Not everything in the world has to be named after what it does.

I'm not arguing against calling it an SI card (or an Emit card), but against calling it that in the context of this video.

By the way, you can't legislate against people calling anything, anything they want, that's the nature of language.

Electronic punch would be good because it would clear up the confusion between 8ibber and punch for newcomers. It must be confusing for a newcomer to be given a 8ibber, then told there's a punching start and you have to punch each control. Alternatively you could ban the word "punch"! Does anyone use the logical verb for 8ibber? Could orienteers dibble when they get to the control? Could you be disqualified for misdibbling?

I'm not serious by the way.

Maybe electronic punch sounds cooler than 8ibber, but its too late, 8ibber's too embedded in the orienteering language. Not sure if its really that important anyway. Personally I'm more worried about Alex finding Rob's "under the bed" collection of 70's / 80's music for the next soundtrack

To argue that ***ber is a better name on this basis is rubbish.

So, possibly, we arrive at a decent and meaningful generic term - a Checkpoint(or Control if you must, though it is probably less meaningful to a beginner ) Recording Card.

When I mentioned this debate to Alex this morning his response was, 'I was taught it was called a ***ber'.

Well, I can't remember taking Alex to a coaching session entitled 'Electronic Punching Systems and associated naming conventions', but nevertheless it was apparent that as an 11 year old who orienteers every week he had no idea that ***ber isn't the correct title for an SI card.

So much must depend on the degree to which '***ber' has been accepted by a club as the common term for the device.

it did occur to me after the last thread on the naming of the ***ber, was that one of the undoubtedly many ways of recycling redundant ones was to sell them to keen gardeners to use as genuine dibbers when pricking out...
