Actually snow making machines use pressurised water as an input, not blocks of ice (along with appropriate refrigeration equipment if you're trying to make it at above freezing temperatures).

Actually if you use ice as a base (eg - the stuff they pack fish in) then any man made snow will last just a bit longer.

I can definitively reveal that xc-skiing on ice isn't any fun at all (particularly on a narrow downhill track), and that even with a base layer of ice, snow disappears remarkably quickly given a slightly +ve temperature and a slight drizzle.

What does trying to go skiing in November make me?
