Hmmm. Pardon me for being a woolly headed old liberal hippy do-gooder, but am I the only person here that thinks maybe, just maybe, there is more to this story than meets the eye?

Hocolite > If she'd stayed in the science group she may have converted to a muslim, then if she'd trained to become a teacher she'd be allowed to teach wearing a full veil (bet she looks good on the school photo
).......I guess at least the kids might understand her trashy Manchester accent

On the one hand this is madness (at least at face value)
On the other hand you have government ministers stoking the fires of intollerance with all this crap trying to stop the wearing of the veil.
"they block eye contact" - So ban sunglasses.
"you can't communicate if you can't see someone" - so ban the telephone.
First they start by demonising young male Muslims as likely extremist terrorist converts,
Next its their parents' fault for not making sure they aren't indoctrinated.
Now women who choose to wear the veil in our free and open society are responsible for - god knows what ?
they put it right when they say that Muslims are being demonised.
which is where the hollocaust took its first steps.

I agree with Kitch about government ministers looking after their own interests....
but if you live in Britain you should follow the cultural laws and norms of society. I don't think Saudi's would be too pleased if my girlfriend walked around Mecca in her bikini top......It goes against their cultural norms and as such we should respect that, just as the lady with the veil should respect british cultural norms/laws.

Last time I checked British cultural norms (whatever they may be, but I'd guess they probably have something to do with freedom (so long as you don't use it), tolerance (so long as you don't do anything I don't like) and 10 pints and a curry on a Friday night) would say you can wear whatever you like. Even nylon o-suits. Unless you want to get into a nightclub, in which case there's no sportswear allowed.
As for laws, I reckon a veiled rambler would have rather fewer skirmishes with the arm of the law than the naked rambler did.

You know what is really crap, is the number of people in Britain who just jump on the Media band wagon, pick up the topic of the week and think they have the answers with out entering into an informed debate with any of the real key players involved in the whole dispute.
I say game on to Jack Straw, Tony Blair and everyone else that has raised the topic into the mainstream public light instead of letting this topic and others like it linger in the shadows waiting for the day when they really explode in our, the British Publics (and that's all British), faces.
Bring on the discussion, but don't just have a one side view of this, open up your minds and see it from all angles, from BNP to Islamic fundamentalists if need be and understand the views of all.
If you have no time for anything then you've lost, game over, the informed debate from all sides will never happen and problems will never be resolved.
This is what's really wrong about Britain, the media is becoming so one sided and feeding the masses with bullshit stories with no real meat to the many sides of the story. The media, and the public need to get a grip and start thinking about matters in a whole different way!

You can't expect to reach the top without a little climbing!

Ask yourself if you want nopesport to become a place where the BNP and extreme fundamentalists can peddle their views?
All it does is say to any member of the public reading this that, in the orienteering world, its OK to be openly facist or racist, and its OK to peddle those views to other orienteers. Not only will it drive away the majority who find these views offensive, but it will add legitimacy to these groups. That's the very thing that these groups want. I'm sure you can find historical parallels in Germany in the 1930's.
If you want to subject yourself to racist or extreme fundamentalist views, I'm sure there are other forums out there. Let's stick to orienteering.

I think Asian was suggesting bring on the discussion in general, not to open a serious debate on the banter section of Nopesport! It's all a bit serious for a rubbish Wednesday afternoon isn't it?
Will? We've got proper fire now!
