but it is the prefered club option in the area, the whole of the north of scotland uses emit and has emit kit so they have the resources and skills (unlike nope!) to deal with it, plus most of their events dish out emit for free with no hire charges so people don't bother buying brikkes.

Surely for a lot of competitors it's simple economics. Sometimes emit hire is free, if not it often costs £1. A version 2 card costs £30, but it's risky buying one of those since some events insist on a version 3 card, which costs £42. As they have a battery in them, the life is limited (10 years maybe), unlike SI. So you've got to enter 4 emit events a year for the next 10 years just to break even, and I guess many people aren't convinced they'll do that, even if their club has standardised on emit (as mine has) - since SI is still the more widespread system.

£42 sounds rather expensive - my wife (bless her cotton socks) smiled sweetly at Alan (bless him) and he sold her a version 3 for my present from Santa for far far less than that - I have now been using it for 18 months and Santa has had his moneys worth.
Seriously talk to Alan - as I officially retire from teaching today I intend to get even better value for Santa by attending Wednesday events as regularly as possible now
