In case you're ever tempted to moan about a UK event again!

Wow! Canada's got the lot it seems - poor maps, misplaced controls, multiple SI failures, late (or no) results... yet they are so optimistic (really nice courses). Surely we in UK could give them some lessons in moaning?

Oh and I should point out.
This race (although yes it was our Championship) is not indicative of the quality of Canadian races in general.
This race will be a lot better...

I thought everyone was being pretty good about it... they'd have been a riot in the UK....
Final clincher for me was finally getting to the start, after warming up for the upteenth time to find that they'd didn't have my name on the startlist and I'd have to wait another 30mins to start... after that my tolerance of mishaps in the forest was pretty low.
Anyway, looking forward to the North Americans anyway.

You're dead right about the reaction in the UK. What really surprises me though is that it seems pin-punching is still widely used in North America, when over here it's really only the lowest level events which have that. Do they still have master maps too?

The problems associated with this event should not be taken as an indication of the standard of events in Canada. Hopefully anyone who attended APOC 2002 or last year’s World Masters can confirm this. The forthcoming North American Championships will not have any of these problems, and neither will next year’s Canadian Championships. These are to be held on some excellent terrain in Saskatchewan, a part of the country not used for orienteering for at least 25 years, using all brand new, highly detailed maps.
The use of pin punching vs electronic punching depends a lot on the club involved. In Alberta we are very lucky that we have been able to obtain grant aid to purchase all the equipment and use it extensively. I can’t actually remember the last time I went to an event using pin punching. In other parts of the country the clubs do not have the same access to funds and so may not be able to afford the equipment.
