I have not done orienteering since i was at school (10+ yrs ago) so am a bit lost as to where to start.

I assume that by New Forsty you mean the New Forest?
Get in touch with Southampton Orienteering Club and they'll point you in the right direction

Hi,
Did you mean New Forest?
If you did it would probably be best to get in tuch with Southampton Orienteering Club. http://www.southampton-orienteers.org.uk/. Their club coach is Christine Currie, you can get her details off the SOC website, under "People"

Help set a course
A couple of pieces of advice:
1. Make sure you have permission to use the area you'll be on.
2. Have you considered insurance (what if there was damage to the land or its fences, for example?). Will the landowner allow you on without this insurance?
Again, the local Club can advise.

I've pointed them towards a permanent course, Moors Valley, Ringwood (WIM) which is versatile, offering a variety of courses, or do it yourself, well maintained and with visitor centre staff with BOF coaching qualifications.
It should make life a bit easier for SocialSec to organise.

orienteering for Rugby Players
Hi Socialsec, which rugby club is it out of interest, I am Colts Chairman at Winchester and I took the Winchester 1st XV squad out orienteering a couple of years ago. What you need to do is make it a team exercise and what you need is something like the Harris Relay format with teams of 3 or 4. The course at Moors Valley would work, but if you want them out for 2.5hrs that may not have enough controls. There are 46 and Dave Rollins did hold the record at 67mins, but they may have been beaten as it was 2004 (only took an old bugger like me 87mins) so would not take even the front row 150 mins to get them all. What you can do is throw in a couple of other tasks for them to do as well, perhaps give them a map with half the controls, then do a four legged race over the treetop walk and then another map with the other 23 controls. If you want advice on the Harris I am happy to give it and provided you are not from Trojans I could even come along and advise if the date fits. We will be having a military league event there on Wed 26Good luck.
