Has anyone seen the latest issue of Runnersworld? It has a article in it, talking to the champions of 'lesser known' sports involving running.
It is great to see orienteering gain this kind of exposure to the mainstream runners.
Also featured is adventure racing and quadathlon (sp?). I didnt even realise that the quadathlon even existed!!

Triathlon with kayaking added on - ie swim / kayak / cycle / run. What I did before I discovered AR (and orienteering).

No that would be a Gomphothere! (Kingdom: Animalia, Phylum: Chordata, Class: Mammalia, Order:Proboscidea , Family: Gomphotheriidae). They appeared in the Miocene and Pliocene epochs, 12-1.6 million years ago.

Did you know they have removed the word 'Gullible' from the latest edition of the Oxford English Dictionary.

Its said the quadathlon was apparently invented because a triathlon was just using the arms once in the swim, whilst the legs got used twice in the run and the cycle. Hence the addition of the kayaking
Still think thats abit odd, since the swim also requires use of the legs

No it doesn't. I can beat my brother over a mile by swimming without using my legs.

Pictures are better than words because sometimes words are big and hard to understand.

Very little use of the legs in triathlon swimming. Particularly when doing open water in a wetsuit, when your legs will float quite well. You really don't get much propulsion from them, so it's better to save them for the other bits, with just enough of a slow kick to keep you balanced and streamlined.
Strangely whilst you might think it better to do swim/bike/kayak/run and have a rest of the muscles between sections, my experience was that that was actually harder than swim/kayak/bike/run (which is the normal order), as you tended to get cramp getting out of the boat before the run!

No I don't.
Also with a good kayaking style a lot of the power comes from the legs
