The suggestion of a £10 parking fee was really me playing devils advocate, sorry. It isnt going to happen if it significantly reduces participation and isnt popular. Plus you'd need parking police to fine Bedders for parking his car off site. Maybe if and when the effects of global warming become much more painful for the UK, the government might force the sport to introduce such a scheme?
Maybe there are other more subtle ways to encourage car sharing?
Another option is the carbon balancing option. Am I right in thinking this is basically buying trees to soak up the carbon emitted from the car? Anyone know how many trees are needed to balance an average orienteering event?
I think this is a valid post and not sad at all. Its only self interest when large parts of Britain could be underwater in a generation or two. Then again that includes Dartford town centre - so not all bad.

I think car sharing ia a great option, don't the Scottish 6 and the other multiday events often give priority parking to full vehicles and families with young children?
Regards carbon footprints websites vary significantly with their 'pricing' for different activities. I think a return flight to Canada releases about 1 tonne of carbon per passenger, ie the equivilent of one tree's absorption over a lifetime.
I think the issue at very large events (ie JK, British and multidays) is the number of gerry cans avaliable and where water supplies are. At least if you supply eg 5000 bottles of water a day for 3500 runners the ammount is transportable. Refilling gerry cans is just not practible in most areas.
Sean C- it was godders who was going to park off site not Bedders
