In a nailbiting playoff final against Peterhead yesterday, Partick Thistle managed to clinch promotion on a penalty shoot-out to turn what was going to be a poor season, into a very good one.
Going into the game 2-1 down after the first leg Partick had to start positive, but went a goal down after only 5 minutes. The quick response needed came only 2 minutes later when Roberts slotted home from close range. The game seemed over, after Peterhead struck the post twice in the 2nd half, but a last minuite deflected free kick by Billy Gibson broke Peterhead hearts and sent the tie into extra-time.
No goals in extra time and the inevitable happened, a penalty shoot out. Jags fans were confident after a good penalty shoot out put top flight Inverness CT out of the Scottish cup earlier this season, and took the lead early on when Kenny Arthur saved the first, and Peterhead also missed their third. Paul Ritchie took the decisive kick, that sent the Jags into the first division, and started the celebrations by the large travelling support.
The mighty Jags clinch promotion!
