Just wondering if anyone from FVO could justify the £6 price tag for FCC competitors, all of whom are Juniors, compared with the £3 that other students/juniors could roll up and pay to run the same course.
Only thing I could possibly think of as a difference was race numbers (i presume)...

I did query this, and got the following reply:
"There is a big difference in the financing of the two races. The FCC
race on Sunday is being bolted onto the side of a large Scottish event
- SOL4. Any extra junior runners from the south at £3.50 a go are a
bonus to the event.
Saturday's event is being put on for the FCC. I expect 50 FCC
finalist. Family members who come along are a bonus. The FCC runners
have to make the event pay. Oban is not local for any of us. It is 200
miles return for the planner and the organiser. I guess nearer 280
miles return for the controller. We are going a long way out of our
way to put on an event far away from base primarily for the FCC.
The economics are dicey. That's why the pricing structure is the way
it is"
Hope they don't mind me posting this!

I know this does happen with FCC special races that are not part of a bigger event. Our club had one a few years ago and it was tough to make ends meet with a small entry and the requirement for prizes etc. Unfortunately most landuse/access fees first aid fees are not per competitor it is a fixed cost as are planners controllers expenses, this is why small entry specialised races are not a favourite with clubs. Also although less toilets are needed they are still a requirement. I don't think an FCC middle race with tented loos, master maps, like in the old days would be too popular. Perhaps in the case of the FCC final the cost of one race could be offset by the other(maybe it is I don't know?), so the entry for each day was more equal. However they are usually put on by clubs not regions and thus are separate financial entities.
Diets and fitness are no good if you can't read the map.

It's one of the reasons why the early FCCs were put on in accessible (but high quality) parts of England. The first weekend had a planner (Martin Bagness) and organiser (Esther Logue) who both lived barely one mile from both races, and involved half a dozen others, plus coaches, parents etc. on the day.
