Simple Soul>>> What do you mean by "...the International element represents an extraordinary proportion of the BOF budget" ???
It was really an aside, and only indirectly related to this thread. I've slung documents but seem to recall that a high proportion of grants and expenditure went on International teams etc. In an International context the JK, a World Ranking Event is home based and had excellent performances from our elite. I would have thought that good publicity would have highlighted this success, and perhaps given an opportunity of those providing the grants to bask in the reflected glory.

I entirely agree that financial supporters of the event, such as the prize suppliers, YHA, Craft and SmartWool deserve recognition.
But more importantly I think the event (it is our showcase afterall) and the sport deserve recognition on the National Governing Bodies website that WE are paying for.
I do, however, have to inform you on the financing of the International Teams. The Word Class Programme is supported by UK sport, and the all the money comes from tax on the National Lottery. This money is solely for national teams. Personally, I am unaware of any other direct funding for the British Team. There is a squad support fund that gives small personal grants, which exists thanks to the hard effort of many individuals. I do not think BOF give any money to this programme.
I think many people have the misconception that the British Team is funded by BOF, and why should BOF members have to subsidise the British Team. Well, that simply isn't true. Squad funs come from the government (national lottery), they want to develop sport to win medals to make the country look good.

If anything, the fact that the funding to the teams is external means that publicity of their successes is even more important.

Re. international funding.
Its a bit more complicated than you make out. The money comes from the lottery (taxes) if BOF make a successful case for it to the sports council. BOF also has to say where the money will be spent, and the government want the money spent on internationals and medals, so that's what BOF puts in the proposal. However, its also true to say that drawiing up the application requires effort from (membership funded) staff, without which there would be no Sports Council funds.

It is my understanding that the Performace Director is Lottery Funded.
happy to be corrected tho'
anyhoo
Robin Field is off so perhaps our new boss will feel that the organisation and sport that they run is worth publicising.
What has been bugging me recently has been the BOF campaign about BOF - All this pish about what BOF does for its members, glossy leaflets handed out to everyone at BOC - who by definition are all members.
So how much money is being spent on preaching to the converted ??
I'd much rather see the effort energy and expense put to publicising the sport.

But hypothetically, what would happen if the International budget was massively over-spent by say £40,000 to pluck a figure out of the air, and money had to be found from other sources to cover that up in the budget. Money that hypothetically might have been spent on other things.
Who would unltimately be footing the bill then?(hypothetically that is)

They managed the article about world schools cos it was submitted to them, there is no big publicity poat at BSOA, like nope interested individuals do it. BOF should have tasked someone to submit report and had the facilities to upload it over easter weekend.

BOF have a salaried individual responsible for marketing the sport. Not sure how long said individual has been in post but long enough I'm sure to know the standing of the JK.... you can't expect the new CEO to know anything about orienteering after 3 months but the marketing person should know a bit & I understand has done good work in other areas of orienteering.
Go orienteering in Lithuania......... best in the world:)

Blimey, I'd expect a full time CEO to be pretty damn expert after three months. Certainly enough to know that the JK's pretty important.
You're going soft.

Have to say I'd expect a new CEO to be well on the way to being expert at the time of appointment!
I can't believe they'd appoint a new CEO to run, say, British Rugby if s/he wasn't knowledgeable about the basics. Let's be honest, knowing the JK is important is basic!
