Important - JK Day 2 road crossing

Please note that all courses from Course 5 to Course 24 have a timed road crossing. The time taken between the two controls either side of the road crossing will be deducted from your total time up to a maximum correction of two minutes. The maximum allowance of two minutes has been introduced to discourage people from taking an undue rest at this point.

what i like about the road crossing is the elite one (which is in a different location) where there is no 'time out'. Even if its in a different location, there will still be the same number of traffic (assuming theres no major turn off into the heart of the forest!) so what do we read from this:

1. Fairness is more important than safety on the elite course??

2. Elite course ppl know how to cross a road (look LRL or is it RLR?)

i think they are saying that Elite Orienteerings are so much more important than us mere mortals, that the cars will actually brake when they see them. some may even stop altogether.

From the results at the recent event at Burnham Beeches, where several slower runners were unable to cover the distance in the required time, even without being stopped by the marshals:

Road Crossing Leg Statement
Times for the road crossing leg have been adjusted as announced in the final details and on notices displayed on the way to and at the start. Times up to 2:30 have been voided, but any time you took over this has been included in your overall time. This has a relatively minor impact on the results, with only a handful of people moving more than one place up or down. After careful consideration we feel this is the fairest solution to adopt.

We were aware that 2.30 would be a challenging time for this leg for some people, but equally we did not want to offer the chance for too great a rest for the faster runners. In hindsight it would have been better to have an extra control at the road crossing to allow a shorter leg to be voided, and ensuring that everybody could get within the allowed time.

We are also aware that some road marshals may have been encouraging people to slow down. This was purely out of concerns for your safety. We can only apologise if this caused you to go slightly over the allowed time.

Let's hope they've got it right at the JK, and the void leg is short enough to be completed by all in 2 minutes, allowing for any holdups at the crossing.

Assuming that courses use this area, doesn't this break BOF rules, or have BOF yet again given permission to use areas for major events within a year?

Don't see the embargo info in BOF Rules, so it must be buried somewhere in event guidelines. In any case, an event can vary the rules to suit local circumstances if the controller and events committee agree.

Not April 1st, is it? Cancel the JK a day before the weekend starts? You won't see much support for that.

After all what is sport without rules? What is sport about if it isn't the stringent application of rules laws and regulations to ensure a fair playing field for all participants?

And what is sport about if it has no playing field at all?

I guess from comments in the programme and from feedback over the past few months that there has been some problems with land permission for Day 2 (ground nesting birds?). This therefore represents the best compromise to ensure we all have a playing field on which to perform on Sunday.

On the off-chance that Guest is serious, may I suggest that your comments might have more weight if you deigned to put your name to them. Otherwise you simply come across as a mean-spirited coward.
