thanks for your input. it will be interesting to see how it goes, hopefully clubs can try and get some strong teams out and make it exciting. the fact its a ukrl race will make it a far more serious race than it otherwise would have been.

the jibe about the good terrain was more directed at the fickle nature of 'elite' orienteers than the wonderful south western forests!

sadly i will be unable to participate due to the slight hindrance of having to take an exam in edinburgh at 2:30 that afternoon! i hope it goes well, that shuoc come no higher than 4th, and that its planned fair and well.

I have run Harris Relays before... they were kind of fun. But in no way serious. Unlike the UKRL, which is probably the most important thing in my life just now.

I like the idea of trying to get more teams racing together, but I just think it could be done by using a normal relay format.

As for spectator interest, the people who are going to be there are the people who are running, not many other people are going to go along. Adding an XC race aint going to change anyones mind.

I assume that by cross-country they actually mean a normal orienteering course (cross-country as opposed to score, norwegian, ...) and not a 6 laps of the school playing fields type cross country...?

This being the first time I have logged on I have noticed most of you are a bunch of whinging b*****ds. It is quite simple. If you dont like it then dont go. Your Student budgets probably dont allow for two busy weekends in a month. Heres an idea, why dont you work for the weekend and pay some taxes? There is nothing wrong with a bit of diversity to test how well you can appreciate the ground and then formulate a plan. Stop thinking about your next meal ticket and give the organisors some credit for giving up their time for the good and benefit of the sport. SundanceKid

Guest, SundanceKid, whatever, havn't most posts said they are looking forward to this event? I am, just that I thought it was XC and we arranged our team accordingly, no criticism of event, just the published info.

What's wrong with a bit of discussion on the "diversity". There may be some issue with this format of event being ukrl but the event itself is good

anyway - how is a student ever going to pay taxes, it must be a monster of a wage for one weekend

Dont take it too personally. It was a only an observation from the outside looking in. I think the harris is good because it means more teams can run competitively. At least this way you dont get trophy hunters stepping down a class when they should be running Open. As for observational, Orienteering will always be pants to watch. On a Harris you can still have a spectator control and the intensity of who will finish first. As for GROSS. More people would prefer to orienteer in Disneyland than Lithuania. At least it would get some positive coverage for youngsters. Bagsy being Donald.

Bit late on this one, but been very busy at work!

BUSA used Harris format relay for at least one relay when I was at Uni and I don't think it detracted from the event at all.

In fact, if format is the same as then, you have to work better together as a team than in a "normal" relay; people have to be realistic and tactically astute to set up the division of controls to get all their team back first.

It means competition was more rewarding than "normal" relay for teams with a couple of good orienteers and a weaker one, and meant teams finished closer to each other, so more fun, and not so much hanging around and missing the prize giving....

Think addition of a final cross-country leg will add to the tactics and the excitement. Hope you all have a great day.

"Normal" relays are great for clubs with three very good runners in age class, but when club can't field 3 good runners this can lead to good orienteers without a current team leaving clubs, and weakening them still further, in search of relay partners (and yes, of course I know the ultimate answer to that is a strong club development policy!)
