Just like to add my thanks to all involved with the weekend - it seemed that any difficulties that were encountered in the run-up and over the weekend were dealt with very well and everything ran very smoothly.
The planners did an excellent job - I'm still not sure about the best route to #1 on the M21L. I was very surprised to read about the issue with the track through the houses, hadn't heard about it over the weekend and it was on my route choice before a slightly earlier than planned exit onto that road led me to change the plan - and looking at it now I can see the OOB line going over a building where I was hoping to join the track anyway... Yes there were some parts of the area which may not have had much of a technical challenge, like the Northern part of the map, but the planners made very good use of what they had. The relay was also really fun - comparing the maps afterwards I was surprised as to how much gaffling there actually was!

Man of Kent wrote:As to AWK's point, I agree in general (and was slighly embarrased at the time), but I believe that the 'BOF official' was merely carrying out policy determined somewhere along the line by BOF members (i.e. all of us). So make your voices heard for a change to this policy if you think, as I do, that it is wrong.
Aye, but there's the rub, because the phrase "all of us" is a fallacy - oft quoted, but rarely happens in practice. This was NOT made by all of us, it was made (in all probability) by a committee. It might have been made on our behalf, but I had no party to this, and would reject it outright. I can't even find any statement of this policy on the BOF site - it's certainly not part of the event guidelines. The BOF official should never have been put in that position (yes, he was just doing what he was instructed, so no blame, although personally I'd have just quietly turned my back and not noticed).
As to making voice heard - I've already expressed my feelings (!) to the BOF chairman, and formally emailed the chair of Event Operations doing likewise, suggesting what I believe should be done. Whether anything happens - I'll wait and see.
Incidentally, this is partly what so bothers me about the proposed membership structure: we hear all these fine words about "The Federation being all of us", and membership involvement, but it's not true. It can only be true if the membership is directly approached on a regular basis (e.g. annual conference), and the decisions taken then. Unless this happens, I would much rather see greater honesty in the system, with membership and representation undertaken via clubs.

Prizes; Spot the difference

anyone read the BOF website item today re individual prizes. This is a little different to what a member of my club was told on Sunday. They were told that as they hadn't attended the prize giving they couldn't have a medal........ The person who said this may not have known, why the medals were not available, but it's not tactful to tell someone they can't have one unless you are certain. It seems at BOF they open mouths before engaging brains. I also think the emphasising of NOT on the web site was also uncalled for. Often people have genuine reasons why they can't attend.
Diets and fitness are no good if you can't read the map.
