British - M55L course
Looking at Winsplits for the M55L course on Saturday, looks like a lot of people lost a bit of time on leg 8-9 (including me). Any thoughts on why, anyone who ran this course (which I much enjoyed)? On the face of it not a very difficult leg/control, though I went off the wrong way down hill.

I was slightly lucky. Went right of line out of 239 to use veg boundary but spotted post with flag on to make great attack point for 202. I think the "distinct" veg boudaries for the control site weren't, so the straight line route became high risk.
A good course, better than expected for Sussex.

Plus there was a massive catching feature just beyond the control (a large rhodo). See the next issue of CompassSport for an in-depth analysis of Brian Bullin's winning run on this course.

2.05 for me, one of my slowest legs. The hill was steepish and the vegetation boundaries not as clear as depicted on the map. Lots of people too high and too far left, when I arrived taking the left hand route. Yes you could see the Rhodie bush but not if you planned to rely on the vegetation changes. But then contours are navigation, vegatation is for route choice as Geoff Peck used to tell everybody!!!

Yes, my worst leg on an otherwise very nice course. I drifted too far left by trying to interpret the "distinct" vegetation boundaries, eventually relocated on a control in a small gully and then went to #9 (202) via the large rhododendron bush. Nice hillside to run down, but didn't check my compass and the semi-open vegetation was difficult to interpret.

I felt the strong Veg Boundary to the north running into the post made strong approach lines for this control. From this point the veg boundaries could be made out and showed a shape as represented by the map. As Neil also added there was strong catching features for those who dared to use 239 as the attack point.
