For those who don't read the front page:
Unfortunately the SROC National Event and World Ranking Event at Whitbarrow Scar has had to follow the JOK chasing sprint and be cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions.
From the SROC website:
'It is with regret that the Whitbarrow National Event has had to be cancelled. We apologize for the inconvenience that this will cause. We have tried to make as early a decision as possible whilst at the same time waiting for the weather conditions to hopefully improve.
One of the main problems (but not the only one) is that Whitbarrow Fell is still under large amounts of snow. The weather conditions at the moment although not snowing, are still very cold and the thaw is slow going which could result in snow still covering limestone rock on Sunday. This would make the conditions underfoot unsafe as there are grykes and holes in the rock.
We would like to thank all team leaders / helpers for all their efforts that have gone into the event so far.
It is our intention to hold the event at a later date and this will be conveyed on our web site once permissions / calendar dates have been sorted out.
Once again our apologies for inconvenience caused.'
Brian Jackson / Dave Hargreaves (SROC)
Full details & intended re-arrangement of this fixture will be found on the SROC Website.

Please note this posting is to avoid problems with local non O people and embarrassment to organisers and competitors.
HOC Clent event is still on but there are parking constaints due to the weather and also I don't think there will have been extra maps printed. The event was anticipating the National being on so numbers of maps would have been based on that. I suggest anyone thinking of coming who was going to the national contact the organiser. There may be an opportunity to run marking your own map, but I don't know the situation, but I do know there were severe parking constraints.

I am sure I am not the only competitor upset, and inconvenienced with this decision.
The organisers will look pretty silly if there is no snow on the area on Sunday morning.
Remember the JK in wales a few years ago... they cancelled Day 2 about 6.30am due to overnight snow... out came the sun... 10.30 little snow left AND they alowed competitors to run on the area.
Oh and will everyone get a full refund???
plus compensation for hotels/b&b/campsite already booked? or travel that some people have already made?

Guest forgot to try to get back his/her 1/52th of their BOF membership/club/region fees.
The organisers have taken the only proper course of action bearing in mind the current situation, the forecast and the fact that people can avoid travelling and at least try to save those costs.
No immediate parallel can be drawn to the Welsh JK - everybody was already in-situ that day.

Well done for making the dcision to cancel as early as possible, this has limited my financial loss. However I must say that ignorant prat who said stop moaning needs to consider that some people can just about afford to keeping orienteering in todays cost for travel, accommodation and entry fees. Oh yes and what about freedom of speech.

I'm sure you're not. Lots of folk will be 'out of pocket'.
But.... guest... why not acquaint yourself with all the facts before posting such a trite, pathetic and inappropriate comment. Even if the snow all disappears, and it looks like the rain on Monday will do it.... letting everyone travel and then cancel when they arrive, really is a waste of money and time!

As i'm the 'ignorant prat' that said stop moaning -i must say your outburst is flawed -both saying i'm ignorant because i'm not and secondly 'what about freedom of speech' -surely its my freedom to say what I want -dur.
Personally I think that the organisers have taken the correct and ONLY desision possible so those that are boo hooing have either never organised an event or have no idea what i feels like for your leg to slip down between a limestone pavemen.
And also if people have forked out for accomodation etc -why don't you travel as you were going to a have a nice run/walk up some lovely mountains followed by a nice sit in a tea shop. Just stop boo hooing.

I believe even if the snow had gone making the upper fells safe the car parks would still not have been usable, and sorting out alternatives and bussing at the last moment in a snow affected region would have been nigh on impossible. Guest get real. Unless the event can be rescheduled and even then there will be costs incurred that the organisers can't be expected to bear so unless there is insurance against cancellation, they can be reasonably expected to withold some of entry.Maps will have been printed, toilets ordered, planners etc travelled so incurred costs.
Nobody really wanted this but believe me if it had gone ahead and there was serious injury the costs would have been higher for the sport.

........and also guest..... if by some fluke of global warming there is no snow on the area - what do you think will happen - they'll be a lot of water in the car park. do us all a favour and never ever try to organise an event - it would be carnage!
SROC are presently in a no-win situation regarding the event - that's why they've taken the only reasonable step and cancelled it - and I for one am grateful that they and JOK have given us as much notice as they have - and if you have already travelled - well you are in a more fortunate position than many other who would have had to wait until after work/school tonight at the earliest.
On this historic occasion when I'm actually agreeing with Nails and RJ - put up and shut up
Oh - just seen everyone's already saud all that - great minds think alike

hey nails i think you're in there!
to the guest: stop being a muppet. do you have any idea just how dangerous snow covered limestone is? muppet, fact. SROC would not take the decision to cancel lightly.

Guest, don't act the victim. You're up there already, you can see the conditions.
Me, my lot are still travelling up there early tomorrow morning as planned and taking advantage of the previously booked accommodation. Pubs with log fires blazing, decent pint or two, couple of good meals and a bit of walking/fun in the snow thrown in too. Sounds like its still going to be a good weekend in any event. Make the most of it - theres a damn sight more serious things than a cancelled event to disrupt your life.
