I have been wondering whether it is really necessary to seal map bags. Isn't it a relic of John Bull overprinting days where the ink ran when they got wet? We don't have that problem with laser printed maps and a big enough bag should protect the map adequately.Godders wrote:It took about 3 hours to seal the BUSA relay maps. If there is a chance of heavy rain.... seal them. Otherwise don't... that way you don't get a puffed up bag with some air in it! Saves so much time.
They don't bother sealing them for the Oringen, and even with the rain they only got wet on the bottom edge.

I made the decision not to seal maps at the 2005 November Classic and it was a disaster!! It threw it down with rain and so lots of peoples maps started to disintergrate. The bags used were the recommneded gauge, but weren't thick enough. It depends what time of year your event is as to whether sealing is necessary. It takes ages!!

On whether or not to seal the map into the map-case: please do! A pinhole in the corner will let the air out, avoiding the 'balloon' effect that you otherwise get in a big stack of maps. (Using a big needle and a pair of pliers, you should be able to pierce 10-20 in one go, depending on the thickness of the map case.)
If the bag is thick, the map is smallish (say A4) and fits the bag snugly, and if it doesn't rain then nobody will complain about an unsealed map. Otherwise, at least some people will end up with a crumpled ball of papier mâché. Big maps in flimsy bags are worst.

49 doesn't even have a map, so he's presumably planning to follow the whole way.
