Weather in the Lakes
Was just wondering what the weather is like in the Lakes - forecast is not to clever with continuing snow showers on and off throughout the week - is this going to be another weekend running in the snow - does anyone live close enough to tell?

The BBC suggests that it is not too bad - http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/5day.shtml?id=2453 , but I'd still be interested in some local knowledge.

Northern Cumbria is wet and snow free (pretty well). Skiddaw has a hat on!. The SW corner and Western edge is under snow.... eight foot drifts near Muncaster, snow plough trapped on the A595! Loads of schools are closed.
The temperature is not too bad (well, 3 or 4), but the weather systems are bringing rain at the moment. I think we will need to wait till later in the week. I am sure SROC will have everything on the website as we get closer.

From Derek Allison, High Newton. There is still 6" snow in our garden, the school is closed and it will need to rain to get rid of this snow. It will not be warm enough for it to melt. It is however raining at the moment so it is going slowly. The parking fields may be a tad damp if free from snow. I hope that decisions on going ahead are made in good time. See you at the weekend?

The details say that it may be compulsory to carry extra kit (rainjacket or some such, gloves, hat)
given reports and the way the weather looks this could well be enforced, so pack your bum bag etc.

If you could run forever ......

Announcement today on the BOF website
We'll be travelling on Friday (because it is a long way) - I hope both events will work together on this because of the FCC connection - it's going to be a tricky call for everyone and I don't envy the organisers of either event:?
Last weekend many events were cancelled due to poor weather. Members are reminded of the need to check before travelling what the status of the event is by consulting the host Club's website or the BOF website.
We have recently received the following from the Organiser of this weekends National Event.
There was heavy snow on the in the Lake District in the early hours of Sunday morning and into the day. If the event had been scheduled for 12 March then it would have been cancelled.
The wintry conditions are set to continue into the week. The snow is still lying in the South Lakes and more fell on Monday. Significant amounts of snow overnight or on the day will almost certainly cause cancellation of the event because of difficulties with access, parking and safety on limestone pavement areas.
Snow could also cause cancellation if it arrives on Friday and Saturday and prevents controls being put out. So..............please check the SROC website if bad weather is forecast for the end of the week.
As it is likely that competitors will be travelling on Saturday or even Friday if they have entered the JOK event on the Saturday we have encouraged the event officials to make an early decision on the status of the event.

from the JOK website
IMPORTANT: The controller visited the Chasing Sprint area this morning and has reported that it is still under six inches of wet snow. Unless there is a substantial improvement then the event will have to be cancelled. The organiser aims to make a decision by Friday lunchtime which will be posted here. Please check back here before travelling

Can I just ask - what is the problem with snow?
If there's a blizzard during the day, and people might get hypothermia, then fine let's cancel - but if it's a nice sunny day with six inches of snow, why not hold the event?
(ok, so people might slip on rocks - fine, but they might also get run over by a bus crossing the road and they still do)

I believe the National event is substantially on exposed limestone pavement? Bad enough running on that when you can see where your feet are going. Reckon there would be broken ankles in snow covered, or even slightly obscured conditions.
What do you think guest? Want to take a chance? How about lying there for 30 minutes while help arrives?

I have just received a phone call from my camp site at Meathop (much lower than competition area) cancelling my booking as they are snowed in - I and my party of 6 now have nowhere to stay for the weekend. I would not consider coming if it weren't slection races for 4 of us.
The entry fee is nothing compared to the cost of the journey and accommodation - you can keep it as far as I'm concerned just please don't leave it to the last minute to cancel. Remember were not just talking about BUSA and FCC here ages- Sunday is a selection race for kids aged 13.
