i know quite a few folks at work who smoke, and are looking forward to the smoking ban - heres why:
in the past, when they have been trying to give up, the biggest obstacle for them is the nights out in the pub. they get a couple of drinks, their will power is down. they are sitting at a table with someone who smokes. fags get offered around and before they know it, they are smoking again.
i reckon this ban will help alot of people give up smoking. and i believe alot of smokers want to give, they just simply lack the willpower.

You should have heard this pipe smaking geaser on the radio this morning, he was ranting on about his rights being removed. He could not give one sensible response to the presenters questions, it was all about it upsetting him and his way of life he couldn't see it affecting others. Ahh this is common with the orienteering perspective thread or even the NIMBY's. They are every where.

All these smokers going on about their rights. They totally ignore the rights of non smokers who value their health higher and that we don't want to stink like they do.

Plenty people stink for reasons other than smoking.... if you don't want to go to a smokey enviroment you have the right to chose not to... that is your choice NOT that of the smoker....
And if your hair stinks of smoke after a night out then wash it & if your clothes stink... put clean ones on & wash the dirty ones.... how many smokers would moan if they went on a University O Club minibus on the long drive home after a hard weekends orienteering... the smell would be terrible:)
Go orienteering in Lithuania......... best in the world:)

at the minute, until the ban comes in we don't have the choice. if by some miracle we manage to find a bar where no one is smoking, all it takes is for one person to come in and start smoking, then the bar fills with the stench.
so we have a choice - stay and suffer the stench and damage to our health, or go outside. So Gross you are telling me that the people that choose the healther lifestyle - the people that are thinking about their health, and the health of people around them, should be made to stand outside? can you honestly justify that, other than to say healthy people should stand outside because the smokers would not be able to withstand the cold weather, due to their weakened health?

Me... I'm not trying to justify smoking at all... I hate the stink as much as anyone... but what does get me is people saying that his / her rights have been abused without reference to the other side of the story.
And as far as health goes there are any number of other issues about but people don't harp on about them all the time.....
What also gets me is when non-smokers are sitting in a smoking area & mouth of all the time about the smokers... as I said you don't need to sit there... go somewhere else... it's your choice to stay or go, no-one is forcing you

Kind of agree with you Gross (don't say that often). If you don't want to get smoky don't go to a bar. People who work in bars maybe is a different argument, although next thing I'll be hearing is that coal miners don't want an underground environment to work in, and window cleaners need to work on the ground. Nanny state again.
What really ticks me off about smoking is when you don't get a choice of inhaling it. You know the kind of thing - you walk out of an office and there's a cloud of smoke. Your walking down the street 50 yds behind a smoker and you're getting the lot. Ban smoking outside I say.

I really think the smoking at entrances is a big issue which has been ignored by the new law...

Oh Gross so if we don't smoke we're not entitled to a social life
I know all orienteers are fit healthy people but I also know a lot enjoy a pint or a glass of vino, so we have to choose to go without or stay at home and have it, or what if we want to dance........, a bit odd doing that at home, no sticky carpet of course

gross, the only choice for non-smokers is stay in, or go out and breathe in the products from those people who think setting light to paper and plants and inhaling it is fun.
Smoking/non-smoking areas don't work, smoke drifts. A non-smoker may as well sit in the smoking area, there'll be little difference in the amount of smoke

You miss my point... you can go out if you like... no-one's stopping you... you're choice. Same as you choose to out training on a wet & windy day... you don't need to if you don't want to....
But I guess my view is clouded

Like I said you have a choice... stay in or go out.... your choice. It's not a defense of smoking just pointing out everyone has a choice

but as i tried to say, we don't have the choice we want, which is to go out and not inhale smoke.
smokers have the choice they want - go out and inhale smoke.
we are choiceless and that choice is being removed by people smoking. (note i found it difficult not to go on about rights, cause i hate that too.)
if someone wants to go out and run in the wind and rain, that is their choice - they don't handcuff members of the public and drag them out into the wintery wonderland with them - which is essentially what smokers are doing!
