Freshers 2004

The hockey club here do a thing called family ties, where older members get allocated a couple of freshers to take care of, its of no use to us in aberdeen as we dont have enough members to do that with (speaking of which, we got a 6th this morning!) But would that be something that euoc could do to prevent the drop off rate?
Argue for your limitations, and sure enough they are yours.

sounds good. i know the law department and edin uni do that and i think medics too. they say its good. you can gear activites such as boozing and small competitions around "families". of course the "parents" would have to be chosen carefully, ie i would put drew in charge of a few wee fresher girls

and wattok getting people lost and doing other things to poor girls doesn't help keep them in the sport!!!

just seen this thread and thought i'd add my thoughts. we at Leeds have just had our agm, and due to lack of participants it would appear that there will not be much of a club next year. Of our existing 10 regular members, 1 is going to America for a year, 3 of us graduate, 3 never orienteered before uni. Which basically leaves a few people to do everything. Having been the captain this year, i know that this is a rather large task, and as such it was decided that if there were any keen orienteers at uni, then people with cars would arrange it between themselves.
The only reason it has come to this is because we didn't have the regular orienteers available to take on the main jobs. I know at Warwick there is only a handful of people who were regulars before uni, but if you don't have them, then there really is no future for uni clubs. We should therefore do our utmost to try and bring new people into the sport AND KEEP THEM! we had nearly 50 people sign up at fresher's fair, of which i have only seen about 20 since, and only 10 available for BUSA. the idea of having a promotional video is fantastic, i got asked by many people what it was we actually did, and despite my best efforts, it would be nothing compared to what someone else mentioned by saying "look at this, this is what we do, this is how we party (students believe it or not do enjoy this part more!), looks great doesn't it?"

The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.
