I saw this article in today’s Guardian – the Australian swimming squad (some as young as 16) were sent away to be bullied by some military types to ‘toughen them up’. Things went a bit far (mock executions etc) hence the news story, but in other sports this sort of thing is quite popular. There was a similar story a couple of years ago about the South African rugby team. Clearly there are coaches who believe this sort of thing works, even if there might be some casualties along the way. Should we send the Start Squad to be ‘toughened up’ by the Army? Maybe we already do – I don’t think it would have gone down well in my days in the junior squad but that was 20 years ago.
