I'm confused. In the Jnr Girls, Snr Girls and Jnr Boys 2 of those selected have an * and the other 3 don't. I'm assuming those without an * had a school team and those with an * did not. However, in Snr boys no-one has an *. Does this mean they all had school teams ? And in which case, what is the definition of "school team" ? Is it across the school as a whole, or just within the year group / sex ? In Jnr Girls CH (Ilkley) has an * but in Snr Boys HH (Ilkley) does not.

I think it's * means no school team. the reason it isn't displayed in the senior boys is because young Neville qualifies as reserve for all of them as he was the next finisher (after RT who will go with the Ulverston team) so there was no reason to choose a non-school team reserve. A school team can be as little as 3 in one year group or if you can't scrape up enough rent a mates then 9 across the whole (large) school.

what if the two lads had finished, not done very well, but really enjoyed it and wanted to do more orienteering?
would they still be 'rent-a'mates'?
i think you're treading a fine line - are we supposed to discourage participation in the british schools?

Because the BSOA themselves say kids must have done some orienteering before they turn up - a minimum of 3 events of a suitable standard - and they say they will check this has been done - and presumably they have in this case because BSOC isn't a come and try it!
guest - yes i believe that is what the * means.

Mrs H, are you sure you are not being a little hasty with your comments about rent-a-mates, scarecrows etc?
Assuming I have interpreted your complaint correctly, the two individuals concerned appear from a quick search to have been orienteering for at least 3 years. And to have had a team placing at BSOC 2003.
Do you think you should withdraw?

No!
If a team is a team at all it ought to be capable of posting a team result at the very least! at this championships not 2 years ago! (I note that the whole of that particular year team only manages to turn out every other year - when it's a world schools selection race - or am I being hasty there too!)
AND when you have the balls to reveal your identity - I might be a little more interested in what you have to say - I stated my stand point at the very start of this thread - take it or leave it - but don't stand on you anonymous soap box and preach at me!!!

Which just shows how wrong you can be. Both Dave and Lewis are regular orienteers, who have scored points for Aire in YBT before now. They both had 'mares on the day. Simple as that. We actually hoped they might do well in the age class team.
Guiseley were also trying to start putting together a school team. Sadly, not this year, but maybe another. In the meantime, tried to get some sort of team out.

I agree that some of the selections appear odd eg Victoria and Chloe are only reserves yet both had 2 consistent results (I'm not from Yorkshire!_ and I see what Mrs. H. means about so-called teams. I don't think my school was checked on 3 previous events rule.
I'm not same guest but don't know how to log in and haven't time to find out!

He is philosphical
Well I've more or less got it off my chest now - as you say they should just take the best team anyway as it's an odd unproductive regime which encourages nothing in particular and rewards the same.
I'm quite prepared to shut up and let other people do the talking.
Still don't understand how CH wasn't picked in the junior girls tho'

But the end of the day, doesn't it just increase the number and popularity in schools orienteering?
Simular thing happened last year - two consistant runs, and still not getting selected with a girl finishing below me both days going in ahead of me.
This year, we got a school team together and despite Victoria being a year older and beating me on the qualification race, I'm still selected ahead of her. Maybe next year if she has a team there will be a bigger chance of her getting slected ahead of me?
Isn't this largely down to promoting orienteering within schools anyway?

As someone who's been screwed over by World School's selection, I can say it may not be coordinated brilliantly but the year team rule is worth having. "rent-a-friend" is one way of putting it,another is introducing new people to the sport.is this not something we are constantly trying find ways of doing. Ok the motivation to boost your selection chances may be selfish but if it gets even one or two more people interested is it not a good scheme?
