Can someone please explain to me what is the attraction of writing a blog. I understand that when you are a long way from loved ones it's nice to let them see what you're up to, flickr accounts ditto. And I understand diaries, a therapeutic outlet for your inner thoughts... what I don't get is people who insist on sharing their cheesy inner monologue with the world. Can someone explain this worrying 21st century trend to me please.
Cheesy inner monologues are cropping up everywhere. some people seem to want to hijack every possible forum available to shove in our faces what they have to say. The cheesiness is unbearable, it's cringiness reaches James Blunt level. I know you don't have to read people's blogs, but sometimes it's like when you go past a car wreck, you can't help but look at the damage.
Anyone relate to this rant?

Yes that's good, i had one about my orienteering exploits when i was living in sweden but now it's just kind of cheesy. It is a nice souvenir of what you've done I suppose. I can look back and laugh at stuff, haha it'll be offline pretty soon though because I look back and cringe as well as laugh!!

So that's why there are only monthly updates of "The life and times of ..."
I must admit that I like reading blogs, but only of people I know, and whose style of writing and humour I enjoy. I'm sure a lot of it is done because it's cheaper than seeing shrink, or because they think they're funny, but don't have the balls to do stand-up comedy.
Maybe...

The best blogs offer insights and opinions on things that are of interest to more than the author and their close social circle. For example some Microsoft employees frequently write about developments and their opinions of current trends. Unfortunately the vast majority of blogs are more "OMG I so just kissed James last night Sally is going to be so upset"

A blog is whatever a person wants to make it - whether this be an account of events, a diary, observation and opinion or just a chance to get something off your chest. and it's your choice to keep one and to read other peoples - no-one forces you to...

That is usually true. Occasionally however some adjective-dripping moral essay is thrust upon your reluctant eyes when you least expect it.
Beware.

what a bizarre argument.

are you suggesting that they should all learn to orienteer? Good plan - it keeps on being said we need more people in the sport. And it sounds like you'd really appreciate it if that happened

yeah blogs are an interesting thing. we wrote about them at work :
http://www.mercurytide.com/knowledge/wh ... revolution
I for one dont mind them.. I mean you are not forced on reading them?! They often contain crap as I am filling up the cartel blog with at the moment.
But at the end of the day its free speech and you dont have to read these posts.
