The courses seem to have been far too long. What is the benefit of having over half the competitors out for over 2 hours? I seem to remember from the LOK/Irish matches in the 70's that even then the courses in Ireland were far longer than in the rest of the UK. Probab;y find that it was the same winners even after the "normal " amount of running time. Be interesting to see.

long, yes, but very enjoyable and an exciting race format - results were clear within 10 minutes of first runner crossing the line in each class. think jez estimated that on his best day jamie would have run between 97-100mins so not far off given that allan planned using the min/km from boc which had a much higher quality of field.

A few comments on the courses. Magilligan is much rougher than (apparently) it was for the British, this added to the lack of tracking up by the smaller number of competitors contributed to the slow per km times.

The SHI is meant to be an 85-95min elite course. If an M40 can go round in 110minutes, then it is not ridiculously long. If I go to a marathon, I dont expect to hear its been cut to 20 miles because the best people aren't going to turn up. Similarly with an international elite race. Remember that none of our mens team got inside 110 minutes at WOC..

Allan's format was good, and had the potential to be superb if properly executed. Starting in waves of four on four loops had the crucial effect (on this area) of reducing the unfairness that an early start would have caused. This was a major plus. Reducing the start block to 10 minutes gave more of a sense of occasion too.

Few people were lapped, so it was effectively a 2 minute start interval. Unfortunately, the opportunity to reduce following was missed. Instead of 24 variations (one each!) there were only four, so e.g. the top Scot and top Englishman got to run round together.

There were a lot of controls (38 ) and few long legs. I don't see that it would have been much different on a standard format: the area doesn't really allow it, although we didn't get to some of the far-away sections..

All in all, it was an entirely positive innovation, with several advantages and almost no drawbacks over a standard course on this particular area.

Seriously though, a great weekend in Northern Ireland. Big thanks to Uncle and Allan Bogle, Ruth Blair and the LVO team. The format was good but the loops could have been shaken up more and the course was perhaps one of the toughest things I have ever run. Not fun at the time, but in retrospect it made it feel like a real achivement. Cheers guys!
